When you reach canada, first you need each one of you to open bank account and deposit in it your cash money and your chq bancaire, immediately you will be getting debit card and good services like payment order chq book credit card .... Special offer for new immigrants and for free for first 6 months minimum.
Now why you need all this cash? I'll tell you why, simply because you are new in canada, in case you booked in hotel for few days until you find good rent apartment you need minimum credit history means proof that your going to pay your monthly bills on time and you need to prove that you work and have monthly income, and in your case you are new! So what some Canadian do is that they will ask you to pay 2 to 3 months in advance sometimes 4 to guarantee your stay and bills paid.
So yes take cash up to 20,000 in your hands.
