So we finally got a response back from Immigration.

Apparently since I made the request and filled out the web form (not my wife), Immigration rejected our request and said that due to privacy I must fill out a form stating I am my wife's representative?

Is this really necessary? There was a section in the web form which asked who is making the request and I selected "Sponsor". As my wife's sponsor am I not allowed to submit a web form about our application? They stated it was due to privacy. I know my wife is technically the applicant, but the application is both of ours since I'm applying as her sponsor. Seems like unnecessary red tape.

Anyways, we are going to re-submit the web form but just use my wife's information when it asks who is making the request. We've been waiting well over a week to have Immigration comment on our time sensitive situation. Is this really the only way to get these things done?

As the sponsor, you can inquire about sponsor eligibility. Anything to do with the applicant must be requested by the applicant unless they have assigned the sponsor as a representative.

Update:

We were finally able to get in touch with Immigration and so we presented our case. Immigration didn't respond for over one week so we followed up with another request through the Web Form. Immigration responded to this request and stated that the appropriate individuals have been informed of the situation and that we should receive a result by February 21. It was worded in a way that made it seem like "don't contact us again regarding this issue".

We've tried calling a number of mental health community service centres, mental health hotlines, etc. and no one (so far) was able to really help us in terms of finding a cheaper psychiatrist. Immigration gave us 60 days to fulfill the request for the evaluation, which would end up being February 28. We are starting to worry that we won't be able to get the evaluation done in time.

Can we request additional time? It sounds like our application will be cancelled if we don't comply, but we really can't pay the $2000. Is there anything else we can do? We thought the $2000 was way too expensive, but it seems to be in line with what others would charge--we were told it might actually be on the cheap side.

It feels like we're just going to have to pay the $2000, but we're hesitant because what's to stop them from just asking for more money (either the psychiatrist or Immigration)?

They will give you an extension if you need it.

Is it better to ask sooner rather than later? Or should we wait for their response first? I don't want to make them mad especially since they told us to wait for their response.

Also, if Immigration isn't going to respond until Feb. 21, will they process our request before our 60 days is up (Feb. 28)?

I would wait for a response before requesting an extension.

As long as the extension is requested before the due date, it would be fine.

It's good you received a response from them. Sounds like they heard your request and will make a decision.
I understand the 2k fee is ' way too expensive ' especially for someone just starting out, unfortunately this process
can be expensive and not designed to be easy. Though it seems ridiculous to have this evaluation done, they
are following procedures and cautiously moving forward. I would do what they say, wait for a response, and then request
and extension if necessary. It doesn't go smooth for everyone so try not to worry too much...That will make you sick.
What else can you do ?
