Proof of ending previous common-law relationship

Sorry, forgot to ask you one thing.. Do I need to send a notarized photocopy of the Declaration of Severance of common-law relationship to CIC? Or just a regular photocopy?

I sent CIC ORIGINALS signed in ink I did not get them notarized however if you intend to send photo copies of the declaration of severance then I think its best to have it notarized. Make sure you have a few ORIGINAL copies done to keep in your personal files at home an ORIGINAL copy may be required at another time.

Can you also tell me if sending a photocopy of the sponsor's Birth Certificate (Canadian) is good enough for CIC? Or it needs to be notarized? I've heard different opinions on that.

I would think a photo copy would be fine. If I remember correctly that is what I supplied to CIC was a photo copy but I am pretty sure I signed the photo copy along with the info page of my passport that was also photocopied and signed.
