Did you meet the residency requirement? Were you in Canada for 2 years in the past 5 years? If you were not or if you were for just a bit over 2 years, they may need to verify your information and the details you provided. When they need to do this, they transfer the file to the local office. No one has any idea how long their processing takes.

Good luck.

You just have to wait until you hear from the local CIC office - they will call or send you an appointment letter along with instructions and which documents to bring with you.

Hi SenoritaBella,
Thanks you for your response. Do you know if they call everyone for an interview/appointment? Or do they only call those individuals who are really short on their residency days? And do you know how long it may take them to contact us?

My parents have been here for 2 years and 3 days on the past 5 years, but their case was also transferred to the local office, DESPITE the fact that they meet the residency requirement.

Thanks so much!

They don't call everyone for interviews/appointments. As I understand it, they can do that for 2 reasons:
1. quality assurance - just to ensure program integrity. e.g. to make sure people are really in the country and living where they claim to be
2. did not meet residency requirements

In the citizenship section, a lady's 5 year old kid was called for an interview. She was worried but it turns out CIC just wanted to see that he was in the country. If your parents have met residency requirements and have sufficient proof, there's nothing to worry about.

Thank you so much for your response to my questions! My parents are almost in their 70s and are totally dependent on us for everything. They have no pension nor do they have any savings. When they are here, they are pretty much home bound because of our hectic work schedules. Every 9 months or so (in the winter), we pay for them to go back to visit their extended family and friends. This is a big financial commitment for us, but it keeps them happy. If they are here during the winter, they get severely depressed.

Anyway, there was a good deal so we bought their tickets for mid-oct nopt realizing there would be any issue with their renewal. I sent all documents they asked for as welll as their air ticktes requesting urgent processing. I highly doubt they will get their cards before they go. I guess we'll have to change their tickets to nov or dec. In the worst case scenario, we'll send them and then apply for a travel doc for them to come back in the summer. If their cards come in the mail, it's no big deal. However, if they are called for an interview, we'll have to have them come back.

Also, as frar as proof of their residency goes, all we have are the stamps on their passports for when they entered canada. They don't work so no pay stubs, etc. They are home all the time. I sent all that we have to them. Praying this will be enough.

This is so stressful for me :(. Thank you for all your help.

Do they go the doctor? They can request records of doctor visits. I don't think it helps much for them to be inbound for long periods of time. Are there any activities they enjoy? The YMCA has a number of programs for adult immigrants from cooking lessons(cuisine from other countries), reading clubs, volunteering, bingo, gym classes, etc and they are more likely to meet other parents from your home country there and will make new friends. Plus, these folks can write letters to support their application.

It really doesn't help for them to be inbound, that's for sure. They speak very little English and aren't comfortable going anywhere without us.

Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.
