Pro' of being born citizen and becoming a natural citizen

When Harper's Conservatives were in power, they pushed some ideas that were basically American in origin, such as the idea that a coalition government would be undemocratic/bordering on illegal! In fact, coalitions (as shown by the Conservative/Lib Dem coalition in Britain several years ago) are a perfectly normal part of a parliamentary system. Similarly, the idea was spread that a Canadian political leader couldn't be a dual citizen and still be loyal to Canada. This was aimed as Stephane Dion and later Tom Mulcair, both dual citizens of Canada and France.

Jack Layton was the one who complained about Liberal leader Dion's dual citizenship.

His quote: "I would prefer that a leader of a party hold only Canadian citizenship, because one represents so many Canadians...it's better to remain the citizen of one country."

So Harper wasn't the only one who had a problem with it.

It's very odd to me and potentially dangerous that there are so few PM restrictions, especially with regard to citizenship. Leaves Canada ripe for the undermining by foreign entities.

Even as an immigrant myself about to be naturalized, I would unequivocally accept restrictions to PM requirements that only allowed naturally born Canadian citizens holding no other citizenship. Foreign representation in a sovereign nation just doesn't make sense.
