Pregnant live-in caregiver implied status -> how to get EI?

Our family friend
- is here as live-in caregiver.
- Had a 24 month work permit expire July 29, 2011. Has worked here and paid EI all of those 24 months.
- has applied for another work permit (same employer) in May - expected to come approx end Sept. This new work permit has an end date of Oct 31, 2011 [employer not willing to do longer because she is pregnant]
- is pregnant (father not in the picture) due Oct 27

Problems - any and all advice appreciated
1. Starting EI - local service Canada office says she can't start EI as no valid SIN
2. Staying on EI - the new (in progress) work permit has end date of Oct 29, 2011 - her employer is not helpful (I think angry about the unplanned pregnancy). So on Oct 29, the next work permit will expire and again EI (and MSP) would end.
[there are similar problems with MSP but was able to get a 90 emergency extension]

Key Questions
1. If we could only talk to to a human being at CIC/Service Canada - our friend is a normal person who did everything right (except get pregnant which happens sometimes) - she has paid into EI, worked here already etc. **Is there any extraordinary appeal/request we can make due to her being pregnant (compassionate exception or something)
2. Any other advice - does the above sound accurate to you? Have you had EI not start (or end) for you due to a work permit expiry when pregnant? She is in a situation where she has baby coming, being blocked from EI and therefore no income – this is very very desperate – what to do?
Thanks for any help/comments!

sorry to hear that....SERVICE CANADA IS RIGHT....IMPLIED STATUS NO EI CLAIM....even you contributes some amounts.you musta have a legal permit so that you can claim your EI benefits.when is the due date?how about her health insurance when will be the expiration date?deliver in the hospital if helath care/insurance expired is too expensive. She must to contact the father of t he baby and if the man has health insurance he can put her as the dependants .....

Murphy is correct. She must have a valid SIN to be able to be on EI maternity benefits. It is unfortunate but that is the rule. She can start looking for a midwife, which is a lot cheaper than going to a doctor. Even if she finds the father, provincial insurance won't also cover her even if he declares her as a dependent since she is on implied status. At least that is the case here in Alberta. My husband was under implied status since August 2010, we were able to extend it for 90 days and after that he has no medical coverage until we got his PR approval in May 31, 2011.

@ lovely20 - Whoa the processing of your husbands application was fast. what program is he under?
@ tryng2 help- yeah its sad to say but if your friend doesnt have a valid wp and valid SIN then service canada wont approve the e.i and its sad especially with the long processing time of OWP now. I know its unfair and a lot is crying out for the long processing. your friend can try and go in person in any service canada office and see if there is an option for her.

Khrizzy,

In-Canada Spousal Sponsorship. I guess we are one of the lucky ones, total time was 10 months 7 days when he landed.
