Greetings,

I am a Canadian citizen on a professors Visa in Japan and my wife is pregnant with our second child, due in September. We've been married 3 years and have no background or family problems. Should we apply for PR now with medicals and have the x-rays done after the birth of our second child? Or wait until after the birth of our child? I know we could wait another two months, but any extended separation will be quite the emotional hardship. Would we have to pay translation fees for the documents again after the birth?
On another note, why does it seem as though phone support is only for inland applicants but not outland applicants? You would figure a process such as immigration would be much more accommodating.

Any help or advice would be great.

Hi

You may as well apply now. Your wife can do everything in the medical except the X-ray; the doctor will give her a deferral form to have it done after the child is born.

What extended separation are you referring to? There is no need for you guys to be separated at all through the process.

There would be no need to pay translation fees again...

Yes, it is annoying that CIC doesn't take calls from outside Canada. There are apparently programs online that let you circumvent that.

When are you guys actually planning to go to Canada? And assuming you were born in Canada or are a naturalized Canadian, have you sorted the proof of citizenship process for your kids?

Thanks for the post. My work contract will be completed come April and we decided it was the chance to move to Canada. My soon to be 3 year old daughter is not a recognized Canadian yet so she will have to be part of my wife's application. We have property here which has to be sold as well as full health coverage for mother and children, so they will stay in Japan until the Canadian process is finalized - which will be cause for our separation.
Thanks, and thanks to all you post supporters!

Good luck!

I hope that everything goes well. I hope that your application gets approved faster than my wife's!

Note that if you are able to pass citizenship to your daughter, she can NOT be listed as a dependent and included in your wife's application. She is a citizen (you just don't have the paperwork yet) not a PR. You must get her citizenship info and use that to apply. She would then only be listed under the "additional family info" form.

Same with 2nd child. When they are born, will NOT be added into app as dependent, but as a Canadian citizen under "additional family info" form only.

Agreed also, get the application in asap with a deferred medical. Based on times out of Manila, you should expect around 1 year for processing until your wife gets PR approved.

As Rob said above, if your children are Canadian (even if you don't have the proof yet), they CAN'T be included as dependents in your wife's app. The last time someone on here did that, it delayed their app by months while CIC sorted it out the mistake and removed the children from the app. You must apply for their Certificates of Citizenship. If they haven't received the certificates prior to coming to Canada, they can travel using their visa-exempt Japanese passports.

Also, if you are able to, you can remain in Japan with your family until the process is completed. There is no requirement that you be in Canada, just that you prove your intent to return.

Big thanks before the blunder.
I don't want to be separated from my family, but would prefer to secure work and a home in Canada before they arrive.
