Pregnant American planning on moving to Quebec...PLEASE HELP!!!

I recently found out that on a trip to see my boyfriend in Quebec, I became pregnant.
We were talking about having me move there come October, but living in Ottawa, ON as it is not far from his family and where he lives right now (Gatineau QC)
Though I have gotten word back from jobs about getting a job offer, I now don't think I can take those offers as I am now 5 weeks pregnant.
I have insurance here where I live, but it will not travel over there with me.
Since I will be there on visitor status and possibly extend if the boyfriend and I get married, or decide to apply for PR under common law (if my status is extended to a year)
I will be getting prenatal care here where I live up until I plan on moving in October. So I will be about 4 1/2 months. Since I won't have OHIP, what exactly can I do in order to get prenatal care, and then everything with the deliver, without any type of health care there?
Are there programs I can apply for, birthing centers, midwifes, CHC, anything in the Gatineau area that I will qualify for?

This is all making me freak out. I know for sure I do not want to have the baby in America. Because I do plan on being there with the father and having the baby in Canada, this was just so all of a sudden that the route I wanted to go as far as applying for PR is now put on hold for another 8 months.

I can understand your freaking out, but you need to take a deep breathe and calm down and know that everything will work out... I only know bout ON but you hafta have PR to get OHIP so you will have to pay out of pocket lots of midwives tho alot cheaper the doctors at hospitals and I am sure if you look around enough in your area you can find a clinic or doctor that will see you they all accept cash but from what you have said you do have other options 1st of all you can't just "move" up here with him you say that when crossing the border they sending you home. you can come up to visit and extend your stay, waiting to apply is good in your situation you obviously want to be here with your BF so you can file common law thing is your pregnant and if your wanting to apply common law you don't even need to live with him the min. the baby is born you are common law. therefore you can take this time between now and when the baby is born to get your app together work on photos, letters, paperwork have the baby in the states where you have insurance, save the money you would spend to see doctors and deliver in Canada. you can travel while pregnant and he can come visit you as well. the baby will have dual citizenship being born to an American and Canadian the baby is also more proof of a bona fide relationship. If you have job offers great talk to them some employers don't care that your pregnant as long as you can preform the duties with a work permit you could get health coverage....

I was planning on being under visitor status while going through the whole applying for PR status. But this kind of hit me upside the head. lol. I have read somewhere about if i was to land in quebec that if i stayed for three months or longer i would be covered under their health? maybe I read that wrong.

As for staying in the states. That would be an option if I had the support here that I do there. I only have my mother her and she cant even take care of herself. So that is why once school was done I was planning on getting outa here and doing the whole process as far as him sponsoring me. I will have money saved that I was going to use to help support myself but he never lets me pay for anything ever so i always sneak money to him just because i feel bad that hes such a hard worker and always wants to support me.

I have looked into a few midwife places that I would have to visit once I am there. A long with a birthing center in Gatineau.

I don't mind if I am having to pay 5k for medical bills after. But anything beyond that is what worries me.

I just get so tired of reading all sorts of different info online and getting all sorts of confused.

it's 3 months in Ontario to, the key word is land, you can't land till you have PR status... with a work permit you can apply after 3 months to, I remember reading, in Quebec if your pregnant you can get covered without a wait but you must remain there for 6 months after birth or they can make you pay it back. 5K is reasonable for delivery but god forbid what if something were to happen it can get alot more expensive, a premature baby can cost 5K a day in NICU.

I don't mind if I am having to pay 5k for medical bills after.

I have always had to pay upfront, and I would expect they would expect some sort of payment for delivery atleast a portion paid upfront.

What do you mean covered without a wait?
Like once I put in my application and all for the sponsorship? Or from the day I get there?

Covered without wait.. soon as you land legally. You have to get the PR first but, your baby will be born before you get PR status.. it's approx. 3 months wait for sponsorship approval and then approx 11 months for stage 2 approval of the applicant, then your PR visa is issued and you can "land".

If you want your child born in Canada while you are a visitor you are going to have to pay for it. you can see a doctor or midwife but I'm not sure your going to find a free clinic when your status is visitor, of course I could be wrong.

Now what if I was to visit for 3 months and fly back to the states to have the baby since I have coverage here. Would the baby be able to have dual citizenship since I is american and the father is canadian?

yes just make sure he is there to sign the birth certificate.. alot of states now won't put the father on the birth certificate unless your married or the father is there to sign... he needs to be on the birth certificate so that when you send in the app for the baby's citizenship card it proves him as the father.

Oh he WILL be there. If not he has some major explaining to do.

I think I will plan on having the baby here in the states and after a month or few weeks fly back and get all the applications filled out and sent in.

explaining to do eh? lol Just found that funny cus with our first child my Husband said I wouldn't miss it for the world, my dute date was April19th he book vacation at work but was only allowed 5 days so he booked it for the 16th well as fate would have it our son was born on the 16th just a few hours before his plane landed with our second son we scheduled a repeat c-section (I knew he would be my last due to age) so he wouldn't miss it! GL with both your pregnancy and your PR.

SOLUTION-


Well if you are American citizen or Green card holder, then you just don't need to worry and follow what I say now.

1) If you are getting any job offer accept it ASAP
2) If you have a valid work permit then you can take the advantage of OHIP only if you have a valid job letter (have to present at service ontario whule applying for OHIP).
3) Extend you work permit under North American agreement "NAFTA", just google it work permit extension under NAFTA.
4) Once you have valid extend work permit your OHIP can be extended.
5) Mean while file for PR under live in relationship consult lawyer. (You can also extend your work permit under livein relationship with CA or PR holder).
