I received a letter 3 weeks ago stating that I need to take my medicals within 30 days, right now I have a week left. Problem is, I've had a family emergency and had to go down to the states (where i'm from) to be with my family though hard times. The nearest US facility to me is 12+ hours away and I hear it's more expensive. Is there ANY possible way of contacting CIC and asking for a 2 or 3 week time extension? Is it completely impossible and I must do it within a week or i'm screwed? I just want to know what my options are, if any. I can't even call the CIC centre because they block numbers outside of Canada.

I found this via Google, but can't guarantee that it will work for you:

The local Ottawa area phone number for CIC is 613 944 4000, and if it was a normal local number you would be able to dial 001 613 944 4000 from abroad and reach the call centre. However, controls have been put in place to detect calls from abroad at CIC and you will not get through dialing 001 613 944 4000. One trick that has worked in the recent past is to dial *67 613 944 4000. This blocks caller ID at the receiving end but works only for calls coming from the US, so you might as well call the toll free number. It also works in Canada but that’s a moot point.

You might have to dial *67 1-613..., if the number above doesn't work.
Good luck!

If you have not left for the US yet, call your closest Canadian DMP and explain to them the urgency and I am sure they will get you in ASAP. Also what state are you going to? It is unusual for the DMPs to be so far away.......also call CIC via an operator and I think you may be able to get through that way and let them know and I am sure they will (hopefully) try to help you out.

Thanks ! That number works. My problem now is the call centre is closed until Monday and the latest I can afford to fly out is Tuesday, so that will be tricky . Are the call centre agents authorized to extend time ? I'm just terrified I'll end up getting screwed somehow , I've waited so long.

As far as I know the call centre folks are not authorized to do anything (you can ask) and they may still not be open on Monday due to Easter weekend - you may want to confirm that. You may also want to try and phone one of the DMPs in Canada as they may have some experience with this, there are ones that do a lot of immigration medicals and they know the system. They might be able to back date your examination date and/or submit a document/explanation on your behalf as to why your medical was late as long as it is not illegal or unethical on their part and there is not too much time elapsed. I believe they are all submitted electronically now so maybe you can find someone sympathetic to your plight who will be willing to say they had a tech problem or an inexperienced person who made a mistake......hence the delay.

Did the letter say anything like if you do not do this within the 30 days your application will be jeopardized or cancelled? Did they not give any instructions in the letter as to what to do if you had a problem? Probably call the call centre....... :( Hope you sort this out.
