Guys who have been so patiently waiting -

There IS a light at the end of the tunnel. My lawyer received an email at 8 am this morning stating my permanent residency was issued. I moved here ten years ago for school, and almost ten years to the day I finally got what I've been waiting for! I am so happy.

These forums have been such an immense help to me - thank you all for your advice, your sense of humour, and the commeraderie! Cheers!

Things have changed a lot, you can even say things are easier for foreign students now. Back in the day, they could not work off-campus at all. After graduation, they had to find work related to their field of studies, get LMO and apply for work permit. Those who were not able to get it and who did not want to marry just for papers, simply went back to school(to stay in status), so it's not uncommon to find students who have been in Canada for 10 yrs but are just getting PR now. I'm not saying that was the case for the OP, but it happens.

Congratulations cec2011. :D

I moved here when I was 19 and never intended to stay! I started undergrad, and changed my program a bunch of times, and finally graduated in 2009. Because the economy was tanking and the job market was crap (and that my degree was in social work and social services are usually the first jobs to go) it took me a long long time to get the 1950 hours required to apply for PR. I worked three separate contacts at the same agency over a 15 month period and applied after I had about 2200 hours. I'm working at a different agency now (in fact, landed a permanent job on Tuesday, officially making this the Best Week EVER) but it was a long process to get all of my ducks lined up in a row!

Hi there!

CIC notifed my lawyer of this via email around 8 am this morning. I believe my application is being processed in Buffalo, however as I live in Canada I will be sending my photocopied passport pages to Fort Eerie to process. Once that is done I'm planning on making a weekend of it by going to Niagara Falls with my ladies to "cross" and plan to enjoy wine country for the first time as a permanent resident ;D

How important is it to take lawyers help? And can you tell me the total amount the lawyer charges?

This varies from lawyer to lawyer and firm to firm. I went with a lawyer for my own peace of mind, as I tend to get strung out on making sure everything is just so and for me, it was beneficial to hire someone so they could do the organizing for me. There are some people on the forums who will tell you that it's a waste of money and you're better off doing it yourself. I think I got really lucky with my lawyer, as he was a friend of a friend (who has also become my friend now) and gave me a big discount (as my case was relatively straight forward). As he is self employed and does this work independantly, he was able to charge me $1500 for the whole thing. If you want, PM me and I can give you his contact information. he is VERY good at what he does and has a good track record - he has won some very difficult cases and is teriffic at advocating on behalf of his clients.

I found my lawyer very helpful, since the fees is only once a life time payment for your future I didnt mind paying it.

They helped me apply under the CEC with all the form filling, the letter drafting and the correspondents.

Hello CEC2011!!!
First off...congratulations on your PR!!! great news for you!! ;)

I would like to get your lawyer´s information if possible. I see you applied in JUN 2011 to the Buffalo office and already have you PR! I applied on APR2011 to Buffalo as well, but still don´t have the final OK. (all though I was requested an FBI record in DEC2011 which Buffalo recieved late March). Than might be the dalay.
We are now living out of Canada for 1 the last year.

Could you send me the info please?

Thank you!
