PR for my mom-in-law

Hi,

Myself, my husband and my mother-in-law would like to apply for the Canadian Permanent Resident card. We have a few queries regarding the same.

Just FYI, my mother-in-law is a doctor and has worked for 33 years as a physician in India. She is 60 years old. Also she has completed at least 16 years of education. Myself and my husband are software engineers and our ages are 25 and 30, respectively.

My questions are as follows.

1. What is the cost associated with this process? This should include all the costs, starting from the application cost, all the way until we get a permanent residency card.

2. Should we apply for my mother-in-law separately or would it be better for us to sponsor her once we get permanent residency? BTW, how much time will it take for me and my husband to get the PR?

3. Can we apply for her permanent residency as permanent residents or we need to be citizens to be able to do that.

4. Will she have sufficient points for her application to be successful? Or sponsorship does

not work on the points system.

5. How much time will it take for her to get PR once we sponsor her.

6. What are the restrictions on a Canadian visitor visa. Is it again 6 months like USA. Can she continue staying in the canada on a visitor visa once we have submitted her application for PR?

Thanks in advance for your time. I really appreciate it.

1) there is the application cost 550 per adult, 490 RPRF cost and then you must have an amount of saving to show.
2) If she qualifies on her own right, then she can apply now else she can apply later. depends on you and how much fund you have.

3) If you were a permanent resident, then why would you apply for it (because you are already it). If you were citizens, then why would you want to go one notch lower. On the other hand, i suppose you are asking whether you should be residing in Canada to apply for PR, the answer is No.

4) There are lots of factors for points, she needs to look at it and see if she qualifies.

5 & 6) I don't know.

You should check www.cic.gc.ca because it has the information with regard to time taken for PR application for different categories and some of the questions you are asking is basic and I or others may give you most of the information but it would be impossible to give you all the information and until you read it there and go through to see if you get 67 points, there is always a chance of getting it wrong. Thats just my opinion. Good luck.

Hi,

5. As per the current time line, she may get PR within 4 to 6 years - if you sponsor her as 'Parents/grand parents' category.

trackitt.com/canada-immigration-trackers/family-class

6. At the time she arrive on visit visa, the immigration officer takes a decision how long she can be granted a visit visa which may vary from 1 month up to 6 months, even though a TRV is stamped by the Embassy for 6 months in her passport. She an get extension for further six months.

If you stay in Saskatchewan for one year than you can sponsor her and she will be able to reach there within a couple of year or may be one year.

Hi,

Rupeshari kinda answered your questions though I will just add some more for clarification purposes.
1) C$550 for initial application per adult, C$490 RPRF per adult, around $200 for medicals per person, and then some more for sending out the documents and police certificates if they're not free. You will also have to account for travel expenses if you have an interview and if this interview takes place in another city different from where you live in.
2) When you apply, you can only take your husband and your children (and theirs) with your application, CIC's definition of family members includes only your marriage or common law partner, your dependent children and their dependent children (your grandchildren) hence your mother-in-law has to apply separately if she wants to go with you at the same time. The second option she has is to have your husband sponsor her well after you become permanent residents.
3) You can apply for your mother-in-law when you are permanent residents, no need to wait for citizenship, but you need to present a certain amount of C$ to be able to sponsor her so it's better to wait once you're settled to start the process, though like I mentioned earlier, your mother-in-law can apply on her own if her NOC profession can be found under the list of 38.
4) You can only sponsor her till you have permanent resident status. Point system doesn't work for her under this process, the sponsor is the one who must meet most criteria.
5) These are the timelines for all processes done outside of Canada. You can check whichever pertains your situation: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/menu-perm.asp Additionally, you can check trackitt.com for timelines of specific cases.
6) I wouldn't advise to ask for a visitor's visa or extend it when you sponsor her since you're basically telling them she wants to stay in Canada (which is not the purpose of visitor visa) and she will most likely be refused. Having said that, yes, it's like the US, she can stay in Canada for a maximum of 6 months and can extend her visit.

Yes, you pay taxes based on your family's worldwide income, however, there are treaties between Canada and several countries in order to avoid double taxation, the US being one of those countries. Other more experienced members in taxes can enlighten you more on this matter.
