For Tax Heads:

I am about to get my eCOPR, and I have some Tax-related inquiries. Assuming I receive my eCOPR soon and get a new SIN, how should I file my taxes? Should a new CRA account be created with new SIN? Should I use old SIN for 2024 FY? Is the update automatic or do I need to do something on my side in order to avoid falling into NOT REGISTERED status for fiscal reasons?

This should probably be posted somewhere else, so correct me if I’m wrong.

From what I heard, the first digit will change from 9 to 0, and we need to call a lot of people to inform them of this change (CRA, banks, employers, brokerage)

Few days back someone posted this "As soon as you get ecopr, just go change your SIN, go to your bank, let your HR know, change your health card and driver's license. I did them all in a few days. The other thing is, since you change your SIN, your CRA account with the old SIN will be deactivated. Wait for the deactivation -it takes a couple of weeks. After making sure that you are not able to sign in to your old CRA account, open a new account with your new SIN number. At that stage the system will ask you last year's numbers in your tax assessment, just enter those numbers as is shown in your assessment, and then you will see in the new account, your old stuff are linked automatically"

Since you are a visitor right now, you do not have a valid SIN linked to you, so no, you cannot work. After receiving ECOPR, you should be able to update your SIN with service Canada and, as soon as a new number is provided to you, you can start working again.
Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate it.

I'm a visitor right now and waiting for my eCOPR. P2 was on Dec 3.

My visitor status expires on January 10, so I'm going to file my visitor record application tomorrow.

You cannot work until you get your eCOPR. While you can start working on your old SIN (if it exists), you will need to submit your new SIN as soon as you get it. Both SINs are linked to your profile.

Hi everyone, i was just wondering if anyone is currently on a visitors record just like me.
My PGWP expired in March 2024
I applied for a Visitors record which expired in September 2024
Before it expired, I received an ITA on August 14th (CEC)
I received AOR on August 21st, 2024 .
i went ahead to apply for a visitors record extension which was approved for another 6months in October 2024.
P1 - December 05
P2 - December 10
I haven’t received my eCopr
My photo and address are still in review
I checked the tracker and it says my eCopr which I haven’t received will expire on October 5th 2025.

my main concern is, i am tired of sitting idle at home, because i am on a visitors record i am not allowed to work. I don’t know if i missed any information, but does anyone have any idea if I can go back to work without receiving my ecopr or PR card. I‘m slowly losing my mind from not working since March 2024. My visitors record extension will expire in April 2025 and I really don’t want to apply for an extension given how long it’s taking people to receive eCopr. Is there any way I can go back to work? I’m so tired, bored and broke .

While you will have to get your new SIN and update it everywhere - your tax record is linked to both!
So depending on when you file and when you get your new SIN - you can use old one if required.
But anything that is PR specific should use new SIN.
