Hi,
I had got PR cards for myself and my family 5 years back, could not migrate due to medical requirements of my father in law who last year passed away. I didn't travel to Canada apart from the one time we went to complete the landing requirements. During these days I have been working in Gulf and it's closer to India. Now we are considering migrating back. I was checking in CIC site but didn't get much idea. I am not sure if I need to start afresh or can use renewal option. Any guidance will be appreciated.

Thanks
Sushil

Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. What I understand is I can not apply for renewal as I have not met the obligations of staying for a minimum of 2 years in the 5 year time. I am not sure if I have to renounce my existing PR status and apply afresh again or I could apply and give reference to my existing card with required disclosures, probably detailing the reasons Which prevented me to complete the requirements. Any further guidance would be helpful.

Thanks
Sushil

It may be possible for you to try to keep your current PR status. You would be better off posting your question to the Permanent Residency Obligation section of the forum.

When you post your question to the right section of the forum, make sure you indicate if your PR cards are still valid (and for how long) or if they have already expired.

As mentioned, wrong section of the forum. Anyways to answer your question your PR status would have already expired. U wrote u got PR 5 yrs back, the validity is 5 yrs. Even if it has not, u can stay only in the country till it is valid. U can only renew if u have physically stayed in Canada 2 out of 5 yrs, which you have not. So at the end of 5 yrs ur status is automatically revoked. U dnt have to mention it as mentioning it wnt get you any preference or extra points. U have to apply fresh. Same thing happened with a family friend of mine, who came n stayed in Canada for 1-2 yrs in the 90s. But left the country and now want to immigrate again. They are going through the EE process, but finding it very difficult due to a low score based on age n other factors. No help even though they actually stayed in the country. Bad luck but u got to start all over again.

This is completely wrong. PR status does not expire. PR card does. PR status might be only revoked by CIC due some reason (not meeting RO, for example) but it does not expire and not revoked automatically
