Do you mean that they cancel student and work visas when you land by stamping them or other physically visible ways? I will need to travel outside Canada and if I don't receive my PR card by my date of departure, I will have to use my temporary visa to show at the airport in the other country from which I'll be departing back to Canada.
They don't do anything to the permits. I actually still have one stapled in my passport and one that I never bother to staple in my passport? When I landed, I asked the border officer about them. He said I don't need them, but suggested I leave the one in passport until I get my pr card. He didn't have any interest in looking at the other one, ironically it was my LMIA work permit used in my PR application. I have no idea why he suggested I leave the one in my passport. When I came through the border again a few weeks later, it was completely ignored and the only thing the guard wanted to look at was my CoPR letter.
Your status is in updated in their computer system, so you don't need the permist or visa anymore. For example, I had multiple work permits, all valid at the same time. At one point, I had 2 stapled in my passport. When I did a flagpole run to get a 3rd, the officer removed the 2 other ones, stapled in the 3rd, and told me the others are still valid and will show up in their system. So, I didn't need to have all three in my passport and not to worry as the other two are still active and valid.

Thanks for your reply. I am more curious about the student/work travel visa's rather than the permits. The permit does not qualify as a document to allow entry into Canada. They are merely permits showing that we are working/or studying in Canada. The visa's, on the other hand, are used for students and workers who are nationals of the countries who require a visa to enter Canada. It's also the visa (a one page sticker in the passport), that would be the only legal document I can carry to prove that I am allowed to fly to Canada while I don't have my PR card in a third country's airport, not the permit. So I am wondering if they physically put an expiration stamp or something on a valid 'visa' when someone lands.
