Hi, I became a Canadian citizen about two months ago. It took me about 36 months for the whole process (I got pre-test RQ). During the waiting period, I fathered a child overseas (I was still a PR at the time, not a citizen).

I would now like to get the baby to Canada. I understand that I will need to sponsor the baby to become PR first. Once the baby gets PR and lands in Canada, is it true that I can apply for citizenship right away for the baby because I am already a citizen (without having to do the 3 out of 4 years waiting period or 4 out of 6 once Bill C-24 is in effect)?

How long does this citizenship process for the child typically take post landing?

Was the baby born before or after you became a Canadian citizen?

The child will be able to apply for citizenship as soon as he lands as a PR because there is no residency requirement for children under 18.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/become-eligibility.asp

"You must have resided in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) in the past four years before you apply. This does not apply to children under 18."

Yes its true. We're doing that with our son. He's second generation born abroad, so he's going through the PR process now. The citizenship applications for the children of Canadians are processed in Sydney NS.

@truesmile: the child was born when I was still a PR (my citizenship process took almost 3 yrs)

@bigredmoose: thank you! do you know how long the citizenship process is for kids post landing if the father is already a citizen? A few months? or 25 months?

@saria1: are you applying for the kid's PR inland or outland? How long is the wait?

Many thanks again to all!

There are no 'inland' PR application for children, they are all outland.

I don't know how long it takes, but I don't think the status of the father has any relevance.

We are applying outland.

I've wondered how long it will take for the nonconcurring child to be processed and obtain their citizenship. There is no information on this forum, or on the CIC site. My hope is less than 12 months.
