Hi guys,

I applied for asylum in September 2017 in Ottawa airport, but I guess my case was sent to Montreal. Still haven't had a hearing date:( I live in Ottawa and my lawyer is based in Ottawa. I know Ottawa seems faster etc. Is it a good idea to request a transfer of my case to oTtawa? Will that slow or speed up my case? It's been 14 months wait :( Any ideas I greatly appreciate!!!!!

Take it or leave it. Hearings in Ottawa and Toronto are in Turbo speed and people who came in as early as March or april this year are getting approvals for hearing. i think the system is overloaded in Montreal because most people choose to stay there and the lawyers have thousands of claimants to push forward at a time and unknowingly uneasing other provinces. I know of someone who came to Toronto in July of this year and have had hearing in NOvember, thats how fast i see Toronto and Ottawa moving while my friend in Montreal says they are calling August 2017 for hearing. if some can move their cases to Ottawa or Toronto i believe they will get dates for hearing and thereby creating more room for other claimants in montreal.

I believe one of the goals is to process irregular border crossers at a faster pace because not all have grounds for asylum claims but the longer they are in the system the harder it is to refuse their claim.

Thanks for your response guys..I guess it might help to request a transfer of my case to oTtawa. Now, will that put me in the new queue in Ottawa or will the system take into account that my case is already 14 months in the system? Any ideas?

As far as I know I don't think any queuing exist and if Ur lawyer pushes Ur case file forward... U will have approval for hearing. And I think Canuck78 is right about them processing irregular border crosses faster. It's sure visible. But grudges are with Montreal as with the Original French people in France. Bureaucracy is always slow and they don't wanna catch up with anything. Canada is beautiful but Quebec is so ancient and they are not in a hurry to catch up.

It's run federally so not sure you an blame Quebec. Always a risk that it could take longer if you switch to Ottawa. You may find you that you get transferred to Ottawa for your hearing because you live in Ottawa and that was the whole purpose of having hearings in Ottawa again. Your lawyer is probably the best person to advise. You are still not at the average processing time so you'll likely have to wait no matter what.

@canuck78, what's the average processing time now.? On the CIC website it states 27months but I keep seeing folks waiting for six, nine, and eight months to get hearing dates. On the other tread where @lucas101 asked @theOtherGuy how long he had to wait to get a hearing date and he responded that he waited "Seven" months and to make it more interesting he is from Nigeria. So I have the understanding that probably because the Nigerians flooded the border so Canada is also expediting their cases to reduce the waiting time Cos I think they were the ones who shot up the time higher @apologies to Nigerian Asylum claimants

I agree. 11k from Nigeria! In my hearing day, I noticed that I am the only non-Nigerian guy invited for hearing that day. :eek:o_O

I guess you were looking at the processing time for Protected persons and convention refugees (in Canada). There is a note below the time saying "This processing time refers to applications for permanent resident status from protected persons and Convention refugees." It is not the time until the hearing date for refugee claimants.

If my wife (back at my home country) has a job offer in Canada, will that help speed up any of the processes?
