Depends, case to case. If you don't have an accommodation with relatives which means you will pay for it, they usually charnge first and last. You should carry 1000 CAD cash. Jet airways is okay, I believe you do not have direct flight and will have a connecting flight Air Canada at heathrow airport.

You have GIC, the day you land here, you can visit any Scotia (better to visit a branch near your college), and you can have debit card issued and first installment of 2000 CAD will be disbursed into your account. You will also get a visa card which will be available within a week. Hence, you really don't need to worry about carrying much cash. At Max 1000 CAD is okay, but depends on person to person.

What you should do is to ensure accommodation, rest all gets sorted out quite quick and easily.

cheers!

what is the maximum we can carry in cash n in card ?

like for eg: for USA, we can carry upto 3k USD cash along with 10k USD in card...

n also, once we open savings account with scotia using GIC, can we deposit our money in it like any other regular bank ?

basically i want to bring the money upto the maximum limit allowed to carry while entering into Canada n put it in the savings account

You can bring as much as you can carry. As long as you declare amounts over 10K on entry (There are no taxes duties on money)
Yes, once you open an account you deposit any amount. Note you need a separate account from the GIC.

so this 10K limit is including cash n card ? wt it means that i need a separate account from GIC ? already thru GIC, they will give me a savings account in which they will put the living expenses..so in that savings account i cant deposit my money ?

You can bring upto 10K Canadian Dollars into Canada - cash. By card, you mean credit/ debit card? - There is no limit.
Yes you need a different account from GIC - it takes only a few minutes to set up so dont worry about it. GIC is more like a savings fixed deposit account. You can put money but debit cards in Canada are issued on Current (chequing) account. So you will have to open this.

You mean travelers cheque ( i think they are the same) - you can get 10K CAD in total (cash + card)..coz travelers cheque or card is more or less like cash in card form...

I do not agree to this part at all. If it's true, what GIC is for? GIC of 10K is for your living expense. Even if IO asks about how you will manage, or how much funds you are carrying, you can simply say just 1000 CAD cash rest I have my GIC and that should do.

Now about carrying cash, you can carry as much as you can (as long as it's legitimate). You need to declare any amount above 10K doesn't mean you can't bring. It just you need to declare it at POE. So once again, if you really don't need that much cash, you needn't worry about carrying so much of cash. Yes you can carry American Express Travelers cheque or any travelers cheque for that matter. GIC gets activated same day when you land, you need to visit a branch and you will ahve a chequing account, savings account and GIC + if you wish, you can get a visa with a limit of 500CAD.

Cheers!
