i will be carrying around 10K CAD , while entering canada and would like to deposit once my GIC savings account is opened in scotia bank.

which is a better option, if we goto American Express or travel card? almost all banks need a savings accounts with them to issue a travel card..

is any1 aware of any bank that issues without savings account and also if American express is a good idea in my case, because i m guessing they issue it in USD not CAD..

In Canada, it's more like a chequing account, though yes you do get a savings account as well. American Express isn't a good idea, I hold a american express card issued in India (not the travelers card, actual credit card) and acceptability was an issue in India and is an issue in Canada. Scotia bank will issue you a visa card with a limit of 500 CAD and I would say open an account with TD or CIBC, if you are going to deposit 10k CAD with either of the bank, you will have better usage as compared to Scotia. But anyhow, you will have to open an account with Scotia, keep it as reserve account.

Cheers!

that 10K is to pay my next sem fee..would it make sense to open an account with another bank just to clear off the entire amount during the next sem ?

also my question was how do i bring this money into canada, american express vouchers even in USD are accepted in Canadian Banks n stores ?

The problem was , most of the nationalized banks in India wont give a travelers card unless we have a savings account with them..i have my account only in ICICI,which charges horrendously..n to open a fresh account with another bank just when i m leaving wont make any sense..so, the only other option i know is of American express coupons..is there any other way to bring this money ? any travelers card of any company/bank i can get without an account ?
