Hello all

I wanted to know whether I would need to get a police certificate from the US after studying there for 4 years in New York. I returned home to the Caribbean after I completed my studies. I am now in the process of applying for a Canadian study permit. If I do need one, is it possible that I can apply for a NY police certificate and submit that in lieu of the FBI certificate? I am aware that the process to obtain a FBI clearance certificate is very lengthy.

i think NYPD will not issue you such certificate.... if they do, they that's enough.... and if they dont do, then you know what to do...

for FBI, it takes 4 months... so, start applying...

best of luck !

your chances are very few ... change your destination from Canada to USA because you have already studied in USA and USA is first world country which offers quality of education ... Either you apply USA student visa again there are also a very good universities or find other country like Australia and UK etc ...

@KEM. I have been already accepted to a Canadian University. It is now a matter of applying for the study permit. Is there any way to expedite the FBI clearance process?

i think the police clearance certificate from the carribean would be enough... however it is advisable for you to apply for the usa clearance letter and if you dont get it by the time you are ready to apply for the canadian visa, then explain it in a cover letter to the visa officer, and also show the rlevant correspondence or tries that you made for getting it............. hope this helps.... you 9 its better to try rather than sit............

hello farhan 88. Noted. I applied for the FBI clearance certificate. Fedex delivered it to them on May 2nd. I was told that it takes 6 weeks to process. Should I go ahead and apply for the visa or should I wait until I receive the fbi certificate?

No, you must include the FBI clearance. Nothing else will substitute.

It is not that hard. All you need are a set of fingerprints and the application. Mail it in with payment.

I got mine back in 5 weeks and I am also outside the USA. All mail sent by first class postage - no couriers.

Note, if you fail to disclose you lived in the USA and Canada finds out, you can be banned for misrepresentation. Canada and the USA shared information about immigration, so it's best you get the certificate and make sure you disclose this on your application.

amikety where are you from? also did waiting for the fbi clearance hold up your visa application?

It did but only because I had to order it twice. The first time, my fingerprints weren't clear enough.

You can send the application in without it and wait until they ask for it - but that can delay your application by 2-3 months.
