Hello everyone,
I am a prospective international student to George Brown College planning to fly to Toronto on 25th November. As I am going alone so I require valuable experiences from those who had been to Toronto for Study purpose. Hope your experiences will provide me an insight regarding POE. Thank You ! :)

this is for indians but its pretty much same for other countries as well
its nothing to worry about
1) u go to air port and get ur boarding pass and check in ur baggage at ur airline counter
2) u go through indian immigration they ask where u going and purpose of travel and check ur visa and passport.
3) u go through security check where they send u through metal detector etc ....
4) u wait for ur boarding and once boarded enjoy ur flight
5) if u have a lay over when u get down u go to the respective terminal.... u should verify ur terminal on the tv monitors on the airport so that u dont go to the wrong terminal. they change terminals often and the one on ur tickets may change. u can also ask ur flight attendant about it too.
6) then same procedure again of security check and boarding the flight to canada the final leg of ur flight.
7) u get a customs form in the plane ...airline flight attendants distribute this form. u fill it ..its very simple form nothing to be worried about. good idea to carry a pen in ur carryon baggage.
8. once u get down in canada u go to the immigration officer...there is a line normally and u will just follow the crowd. Two different lines one for canada citizens /PR and other for foreign nationals. u join the foreign national line. everything is clearly marked so no worries read the boards.
9) at the end of line u will meet an immigration officer. once u tell him ur a student and visited canada for education he will direct u to a different immigration office .
10.) u will have to collect ur baggage before u go to that different office.
11) in the office they will ask u for all ur documents like ur passport, CAQ(if going to quebec) , admission letter and LOI.
12) then u wait as they process ur study permit and print it out. they will ask u very simple questions . purpose of visit etc no questions about finances etc.
13)they give u the printed copy of study permit they may tell u what u shouldnt do or the restrictions on ur study permit and then off u go out to find a taxi.....
there may be some difference depending on which airport u land.

Thanks mead ! That was really a whole procedure description in brief ! I just wanted to know whether Study Permit Visa entails the name of the institution where I am going to study, and does it contains any picture of the applicant on the Visa Stamp seal. Just one more thing to add, when will I be able to get SIN ? Thank You :)

Hi Mead! very detailed description of your experience of going to Canada. I was just wondering:
1) What is the duration of the study permit given at the airport?
2) You mentioned that SIN is given at 'service'.. you mean at the airport itself?

Thanks!

Normally institution name is not mentioned on the study permit but in some cases they do so cant say for sure but in either case if u change institution u have to notify CIC through MyCIC portal. visa stamp nor the study permit have picture of the applicant however they take ur picture at POE and take ur finger prints. I dont get the question about picture did u give someone else's picture? U will have to go to "service canada" when u arrive in canada and apply for SIN it is given on the same day.

Do Canadian Border Security asks for Tuition Fee receipt ? ::)

They some times ask for proof of funds. I would suggest its a good idea to carry all the document that u used for visa application with u in ur carry on luggage

Hi,
If the study permit has a institution name on it, can we not change institution?
EVen if we notify CIC later on, can we not change it?

What if we just used GIC and college fee receipt for finances for visa?
Do I need to carry anything else for financial proof?

Thank you for your response...
I read somewhere long ago some students were made to wait at Canadian airport for many hours and then sent back to India because the officer "felt" they will work illegally instead of studying...is this true?

How often does this happen?
Why/when does this happen?

Any precautions we can take to not fall into such a trap?

Please do let me know..I feel scared :I :(

I have my visa for 19 months for a 16 months course. But now I want to enroll to a 1 year program. So will it be wise to show the new Letter of Admission during immigration or check-in with the old one and change later using myCIC account. If I change it from immigration, how long will be the study permit be valid for as I have TRV valid till July 2017 (course ends on December 2016). Valuable comments will be highly appreciated. :)
