Hi all,

I have a Japanese student staying with me who forgot to show her papers at the airport upon entry into Canada, so she didn't get her student visa. We live in Halifax, NS - the school is telling her to go to the US border - an 8-hr bus ride away - and re-enter the country, showing her papers there and getting her study permit. Is there no way she can go to the airport to get this done? Or an Immigration office? Has anyone here had that experience?

Thanks.

I remember that I got a bulletin along with the hard copy of university admission letter. It says "If you leave the customs before you get the study permit, you will have "visitor status". Once you enter Canada, it will be very difficult ti change this status and you will not be able to study without the correct permit"
I know this is not a solution, but I do recommend him/her to contact CIC in Canada as soon as possible.

she forgot to "show" her papers, basically she had papers when she arrived, but i think she skipped the process of getting study permit.

Hey guys,
Regarding declaring good and filling in the form, what do we declare? Laptops and cell phones...etc (valuable items)
or we have to declare every single item in our baggage? i.e toothbrush, clothes, sheets and etc.??

One small confusion .which one would be port of entry in my case Toronto or Manitoba.Going to study in red river college.
Flying as mentioned DELHI > LONDON> TORONTO> WINNIPEG.
So they would issue study permit at port of entry.confused !! What exactly is s1 visa then?
I have co op program for 4 months .should I inform immigration officer about this.

1)toronto will be ur POE
2)Yes they will issue study permit in toronto for u ....a visa is a document that lets u enter canada and study permit is a document that lets u stay in canada legally .
3)if urs is coop program do mention it at POE u may get a work permit too.

http://www.beaware.gc.ca/english/declaree.shtml

Canadian law requires that you declare all food, plants and animals and related products that you bring into Canada. Failure to declare could lead to

confiscation of products
fines of up to $1300 per undeclared item
prosecution

it is recommended to make 2 copies of the list.

Thanks for your replies! but I am now confused!

The link that hell911 quoted says that I have to declare food, plants and animals and related products.

The link that mead quoted says: Before arriving in Canada, you should prepare two copies of a list (preferably typewritten) of all the goods you intend to bring into Canada as your personal effects. Include the value, make, model and serial number (when applicable).

Also, As a visitor, you can bring certain goods into Canada for your own use as "personal baggage". Personal baggage includes clothing, camping and sports equipment, cameras and personal computers. It also includes vehicles, private boats and aircraft.

You must declare all goods when you arrive at the first CBSA port of entry. Border services officers do conduct examinations of goods being imported or exported to verify declarations. If you declare goods when you arrive and take them back with you when you leave, you will not have to pay any duty or taxes.

Someone please explain this? I think both of you have already landed in Canada and gone through this.

I gave u the CBSA website link. However personally i didnt do a list as I am used to international travel. Since ur traveling for the first time u could make a list of all the items ur carrying just in case. Also there is difference between declaration of goods and paying duty on goods...yes ur allowed personal items and alot of things under first time visitor/temporary resident which means there will be no duty on items however u still have to declare what ur bringing.
