I can't imaging how frustrated your friend is right now, best wishes to him.
Why your friend is considered as a concern? Did he serve in an army before? As an international student, I feel like my background is as simple as zero...

I am guessing his name, city of birth/ home address and job title might have raised some red flags.

He did PhD in computer science and works as a data scientist so I don't know what's wrong there, he has never served in any armed forces.

For international students its mostly straight forward unless there are unjustifiable gaps in history or an applicant is selected randomly for back ground check LOL

Yesterday, I checked my status in cic, started background check and received PPR.
Today, I checked my status in ECAS, my application has been decision made.

I am MPNP, Aug 18 received.

do you think doing upfront medical was a mistake and it will delay our process as most of the August 2 applicants received their PPR already.

That shouldn’t be as cic site clearly states that upfront medical may shorten the process.... I wish you receive real soon .

One of my friend went back to China 4 months ago and she returned to Canada today, Im really sure she submitted her PR application later than mine. And she got her COPR at the Vancouver border today... I have no idea whats going on.

As I said, I am July 2016 inland MPNP applicant, and MYCIC shows me medical passed and ecas shows Medical received since October 2017. No updates at all for me.
