Maybe you are right !!!

So my security passed as well...
I think in your case, they are taking time to check your spouse background. It's different than criminality and security. It's about verifying her personal info. I may be wrong. Just a guess.

Well she has the same as well... her's is NO REPORTABLE TRACE as well..

NRT is related to RCMP which is totally different than security.
Security check is completely different and as it is mentioned in that link it may take 3 months. That is for 2001 though.
Also, in my GCMS notes in front of security all along the document is blank. So, I have no idea how much does it take and when did they initiate it !

@ Holygun & Edmontonbound,

I've always mentioned here that many a times criminality has been passed but the officers don't update it. It is a different officer who updates the info received by the visa office. your officer only does the Eligibility check and File review based on the result of the checks. In my case, my criminality had been passed but they refused to update it. Officer made a comment 'please pass criminality...NRT'. Do you know that 2 months after that time, they still didn't pass it...it shows 'in progress' until I got PPR. If it shows NRT, it means it is passed...

Hope this helps!

What about background checks?

Background check is done by the RCMP in connection with CSIS. It all depends on a lot of things. Your country of origin, your current location, how long you've been at the location, what countries you've travelled to. It should be relatively easy for anyone who hasn't gone home in over a year. The only issue that can happen is if many people bear your name also. For example in India, every girl born in Sikh is given the last name 'Kaur' and every man born is given 'Singh' (please correct me if i'm wrong). Let's assume your first name is amit...I tell u dat a lot of people wl have the same name as you. If any of them should have a criminal record, then it will slow down yours a little bit. That's the essence of submitting a finger print with your police certificate. It helps to distinguish you.

In all, background check can be very fast & can also be very slow. If you've visited some countries in the middle east, expect that they will do further verifications on you. This doesn't mean you are a bad person.

@Holygun - you're almost forcing CIC to process your file. LOL. I liked the idea.

@ coshx - so how do you know that your background checks are cleared in GCMS notes?

What else I can do man? They need some push :)

I just give them the push they need! Hope it works.

If it says NRT, plus valid till: i.e. 2014/08/20

your criminality/security is clear... one of them i dont know which one :)

In front of Security is blank ! nothing is mentioned.

My notes says criminality not started ,
But in criminality portion status says - no reportable trace
Criminality history - 0
I could not understand it,

It should say something like this:

Criminality 1
RCMP screening -NRT -passed- XXX police certificate - no arrest record - passed
Old value - Not started
New value - In progress
Updated on -YYYY/MM/DD
