Please provide proof if you are or not in a common-law relationship

I just received the above request from CIC. I am very sure I am not in a common-law relationship. My question is, how can I provide proof that I am not? This request really confuses me and I am here to seek any advice.

Do you have any documents that explicitly state that you are single. You can scan that an attach it. Example: Indian passport has wife's name in it. My passport before marriage had that field empty but now my wife's name is on it.

I have only applied study permit and work permit before, none related to marital status.

my passport does not come with that
I can't think of any document that would ask for my marital status right now. I am currently calling customer service and waiting.

But in those applications it would have asked if you were married or single or common law. Did you select single for those? Did you file taxes as single?

I got an agent looking into my application. The explanation is that I have indicated single and common-law in my previous application. I need to write a letter of explanation and submit it. At least it does not require notarization.

That's why they are asking. You once claimed to have been common law. They want to see evidence you are no longer common law.

I assume they have a similar workflow to CRA.

You can be single and then common law - no issue
You can be common law and then married - no issue
You can't be married and then single - You must be divorced.

Either way, they just want to be sure you aren't going to show up with a spouse or try and have applied as single to get more points/hide them.

A LOE explaining your error, tax returns as single, anything official without a spouse being indicated should be fine.

I agree. They need it to be official so that later on things are clear at both ends
