My husband has a DUI from 2007 and in 2012 I applied for him for a Temporary Resident Permit. It seems to be called Temporary Resident Visa now? Is that right? Because they want different things this time. I have tried to call, e-mail, etc. and have not found anyone to talk to. Then I found this forum hoping someone with knowledge can help? The websites are too confusing for my addled brain.

I was trying to find another document checklist for what I'm pulling together only to find two versions dated 12-2013. One for Visa and one for Permit. They want different things...the Visa one says to send the passport. The Permit one says to send a photocopy of the passport.

So I guess my question is I need to know first am I applying for a Temporary Resident Visa or Permit? It was a permit back in 2012 but looking through the various sites, I thought it looked like it's now called just a Visa. But I'm unsure. Can anyone help me make sense of this? He is not physically staying in Canada, but needs the work visa/permit to fly into and out of Canada. I realize I could have "renewed" it before it expired, but I did not know that at the time and didn't do it in time which I'm kicking myself for. I find all this immigration paperwork confusing. I just don't want to physically mail out his passport and find out we weren't supposed to and we can't get it back.

Thank you!!!

Drop the Permit or Visa stuff.... start clean....

OK so he needs in and out, what country is his passport from? and most important what will he be doing in Canada? For whom? Where is he employed?

Ok from the top. We are in America and he is employed here. He is an airline pilot and needs to be able to fly in and out of Canada, sometimes spending the night. He has a DUI from 2007 so that made him inadmissible through the normal way. He applied for a Temporary Resident Permit and it was granted. It expired in May of this year. (I wish I had noticed that..) Anyway..in looking at the old paperwork it says Permit but everything I'm finding now is saying Visa which is my problem.

As I said please drop the Permit/Visa issue. Erase it from your mind. It only confuses you (and us).

America where? The continent is quite big.... but well, it doesn't matter which country in America are you in, what matters is what is the nationality of your passport. As I read you needed a Visa before so I don't think any American country has changed its status in the last years but Mexico... but again you are not from the USA so you will be needing a Temporary Resident Visa.

Pilots need a TRV for more than 24 hours stays. So apply for a Temporary Resident Visa

(again, drop the permit, visa or whatever issue, we only care about today not yesterday).

We live in Minnesota in USA. My husband is criminally inadmissible into Canada due to his DUI. He needs to be able to fly in and out of Canada as he is an airline pilot. I just need to know what forms to fill out so he can do this.

Ah OK, please don't use acronyms!!!!

So the passport is from the USA? I think this is the very first thing you have to clarify. But I guess it is.

It is a PERMIT:

Use this information:
http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-eases-entry-rules-for-visitors-with-minor-convictions.html

http://www.canadaduientrylaw.com/

You can't find more information because you are now required to contact the Visa Office for application specifics so please contact them:

Thank you for your help and I'm sorry I've been confusing, but I'm still where I was. One of the links you gave talks about how a permit is needed and not to confuse it with a visa. But I can't find the permit application anywhere. I can only find the visa application and according to that site I shouldn't use that one. So I guess my question is...where is the Temporary Resident Permit application?

There is no online application. You have to contact the visa office. I put the contact in the final lines of my previous post. Here they are again,

A TRV (temporary resident visa) and TRP (temporary resident permit) are two different things. Your husband needs a TRP to enter Canada since he's currently inadmissible due to the DUIs. A TRP is what people apply for when they are inadmissible to Canada and would like to enter Canada during the inadmissibility period. A TRV is what people apply for when they are from a non visa exempt country and want to visit Canada (consequently this visa doesn't apply to your husband).

As Jalex23 explained, there is no online process for TRPs. You should contact a Canadian visa office in the US to find out how to apply. Note that TRPs are granted for one visit only (i.e. a TRP only allows you to enter Canada once) - they don't allow you to enter Canada multiple times. You'll need a new TRP for each entry.

If his DUI was in 2007 then he should qualify for rehabilitation now. This is what you should apply for instead. Once the rehabilitation application is approved he will be able to enter Canada without a TRP.

I'm not looking to fill anything out online. I just want the same form I printed out two years ago. I downloaded it and printed it from somewhere (I didn't think to save it...didn't think it would be so hard to find again.) I know I need a Permit. I just can't find the application to print out to send in. I found it two years ago. I physically filled papers out and mailed them. That's why I'm so frustrated.

I already paid the fee for Temporary Resident Permit. So I know it exists. I just can't find it anymore.

That was 2 years ago, most likely they removed them, CIC changes procedures all the time. Why don't you contact (give a call) the VACs provided?

No, being able to pay online doesn't imply that the application forms are online. Two different things.

Just in case someone is in my same position, the LA office sent me an FAQ form (I assume it's on the website somewhere too but I never thought to look there). They said for a Temporary Resident Permit you actually fill out the Application For Criminal Rehabilitation (form IMM 1444E) and mark the second box that says "for information only". The Document Checklist is form IMM 5507 E and the Fee form is IMM 5310 F.

Thanks to all who took the time to answer and help me out, I appreciate it.

Thanks very much for the great links! I was told I need a "Temporary Resident Visa" but when I did some searching I found this thread on Google and then did my research and what I needed was a Temporary Resident Permit. Just for the record, American Citizens don't need a "Visa" to enter Canada unless they are going to be studying or working there. DUI entry is always a Temporary Resident Permit if you are a US citizens. Thanks again!
