I am planning to study PGD in Canada (I am B.Tech Civil with 3 years of exp.)

What are the various options of fulfilling financial requirements for getting student visa?

Neither I nor my family have that much liquid money / savings. (Only property we have is our Home)

Can I get student visa with the help of Student Loan ONLY???

Hi,

Studying in Canada is indeed an expensive affair.
For studying 1 year in say some Ontario based college, a PG certificate programme.. it can cost anywhere between 10,000-18,000$ for tuition fees/year or more. Add to that, one has to show minimum 10,000$ for annual living expenses and say 2-4,000$ for airfare and miscellaneous expenses. That's say average 15,000$ fees+10,000$+2,000$= 27,000$/year or say anywhere between 12-16 lacs INR. The costs are even more for university level studies, although there are some very affordable universities like the Memorial university, which has lowest tuition fees in whole of Canada. So..usually one needs to show such amount... to the visa officer and prove that you have adequate funds to cover your tuition + living expenses, while studying in Canada. Of course..later, the living costs can be reduced by working part time and cutting down one's expenses, provided you do get an ON-campus or Off-campus job (eligible only after 6 months of actual studying..and that too not easily available in smaller cities/towns). You can also offset the cost..by applying to a research based Master degree in your area of engineering (provided you are eligible..where universities require minimum 60% in final 2 years of B.E form students of Indian subcontinent), where chances of getting scholarships/funding is very high. Also, studying a good Master degree in "engineering"...even if it's course based from a good university...even if costs are higher... in long run ..in my opinion is more beneficial.

So..given such huge expenses, most students (atleast the middle class) from countries like India, rely heavily on students loan. Yes, now you can get study visa entirely on education loan.. as the CIC now requires you to pay 2 sem/full 1 year tuition fees and show 10,000$ for living expenses either by purchasing GIC certificate OR showing education loan (this is for SPP category). Although, how you get the loan.. totally depends on you/your family's capability.

if you are from India, there are 3 study visa categories you can apply to and in each different options have been mentioned to show proof of funding:
1. general category - requirements/checklist as given by CIC - http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/study_permit_20-09-2012.pdf - for general application to all colleges.
2. SPP category - http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/delhiSPPchecklist-eng-050213.pdf - for general/univ. application to selected edu. institutes under SPP
3. University category- http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/Delhi_study_permit_1_22.10.12.pdf - for university applications

Thank you very much for such a useful reply....!!

So, thing is like....
I have to arrange fund = my 1 year's fee + misc. expense... (initially)
after paying 1 year tuition fee... Get education loan and that's enough (financially) for getting student visa.

Is it ok?

Show a loan of around 10 lacs + at least pay one year or semester fees.

I think it will be good for you.

Good Luck

Hi,

You are mistaken. it's not, that you have to show only 10,000$ with an education loan..if you are able to get loan...of greater amount...u can take loan for other expenses such as tuition fees also.
While CHC is now only concerned that you pay the 1st year/2 sem fees AND show 10,000$ for living expenses by purchasing GIC certificate OR show education loan...(for SPP)... it's entirely upto you to decide the loan amount (to take loan for tuition fees or not).
If you are applying under General category, you can fulfill the financial requirements by taking a full loan..equivalent to 1st year tuition fees+10,000$. While SPP category.. asks that you preferably purchase GIC certificate of 10,000$/ or education loan of 10,000$ and pay 1st year tuition fees. They have not mentioned..whether you pay it by loan or not..it's upto you. So..you got to see..under which category you are applying for study permit... see the checklist..and apply with appropriate documents.
Again..I'm repeating..go through these official checklists for different visa categories.... and prepare your application as per the list:
General category - http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/study_permit_20-09-2012.pdf
SPP category- http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/delhiSPPchecklist-eng-050213.pdf
University category- http://www.vfs-canada.co.in/pdf/Delhi_study_permit_1_22.10.12.pdf

Hope it clears your confusion.

Yes, exactly.... it is mentioned that..

PREFERRED OPTION for proof of funds: you can fulfill the financial requirement by
submitting a copy of an Educational Loan from an Indian Chartered Bank equivalent to at
least first year’s tuition plus $10 000 CAD to cover living and travel expenses for one year.

That means I can totally rely on education loan... (?)
