Did you ask for your interview to be conducted in your language or in French? Because if you
needed the interviewer to speak your language, you would've had the right to do that. My
husband had his interview done in turkish language, because he is not fluent english.

I would think that proving you didn't understand what they were saying and the date they gave you for your interview would be difficult. With regards to that I think the only thing your wife can do is go into the DR, answer their questions as honestly and heartfelt as she possibly can, and hopefully they believe that you truly just didn't understand what they were asking you. Also, since it is your right to have your interview conducted in your own language with a translator available, she should also explain that you were both unaware of this and now after more research for the ADR you realize your grave mistake.
Because there's no real physical proof you can probably get to prove this, your best bet is just to be as heartfelt and forth coming as possible....

Good luck.

I agree with the advice given above. Your wife can state that you did not understand the visa officer at your interview very well, but she should not dwell on this point. Usually the appeal judges do not believe this explanation, because the visa officers are always supposed to ask the applicant if they understand, and tell the applicant to let them know if they don't understand the question. So the appeal judges do not pay much attention to applicants who then say they couldn't understand the visa officer.
Your wife should gather all the evidence she can that your relationship is genuine, and present it at the ADR. She should concentrate on proving the relationship is genuine, and not spend too much time on how well you understand French.
