Im visiting my boyfriend(canadian) and im american . Wat do i have to do to stay longer than 6 months? what kind of paper work I have to fill out? Im goin in june. and we are planning to get married while im there visiting. what paperwork i have to go through. I need all the steps.. THANK YOU.. please someone help

I don't think anyone here will be able to tell you ALL the steps, LOL. There are different ways to go about it. And it all depends on what you're trying to do, I think? (Do you want to get permanent residence? Or just an extended visa? Will you be living in Canada just for a little while? Permanently?)

Maybe the best thing to do would be to go to the Canadian Customs and Immigration (CIC) website and read thru the descriptions of the different routes.

As far as I know six months is the maximum you would be allowed in one stay.

If you enter Canada and are allowed to stay for six months, you can request an extension to your visa, the cost is $75 for the extension.

im going to canada in june and i want to stay there permanmently.What is the best way going about it? I'm planning on flying from Texas to Ontario. Is there anything that i need to do at the border? LIke what do i say?

He wantsto buy me a one way ticket becuz we are driving back to the states to get the other stuff? Im jus lost.. but i know that we want to get married.

One way ticket, hmm,... remember on a visit you must (taken from CIC site):

have a valid travel document, such as a passport,
be in good health,
satisfy an immigration officer that you have ties, such as a job, home and family, that will take you back to your country of origin,
satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit and
have enough money for your stay.

The amount of money you will need can vary with the circumstances of the visit, how long you will stay and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives.

The ticket option is your call, it may help you to choose if you read the requirements that you must meet to be a visitor.

Being married to a Canadian does not give you automatic residency in Canada, you need to complete the immigration process - for married folk, spousal sponsorship is what you need. (there are other ways).

Your request is specific, I can't give you exact answers only my views, as you know the facts and I do not, but in general.......

Have you lived with your boyfriend at all, if yes, how long - there may be other options?

You really intend to be married, not just so you can stay in canada?

What date do you want to get married (see ** note below)?

Get your boyfriend to look up the information about getting married in his province/town - make sure you have all the papers that you need for the marriage.

Decide when you want to visit Canada, arrange a flight - be a visitor.

Make sure you meet ALL the criteria as a visitor, arrive in Canada and see how long the Port of Entry officer lets you stay. ** depending on how long you are given, adjust your wedding date to fit the time.
If thePOE officer believes you are here to stay they can refuse to let you in.

Live with your boyfriend, make sure you want to marry him

Get married, apply for PR and ask for a visa extension.

Applying for PR includes but is not limited to: Reading the CIC Web site, reading lots of notes about filling in forms, filling in loads of forms, paying the fees, getting medical and police checks performed (note that they are time sensitive, they expire), waiting, maybe being called for an interview.

Passport - I believe you do, but i am a Brit, so maybe someone else can confirm.
The USA is on the list of Visitor Visa Exemptions so you do not need a visa (more details at the link below).

Hi a_larae3,

I think what everyone here is trying to say is that there is no simple answer as far as what you can do. Immigration is a long process with a lot of ins and outs and decisions that no one else can make for you.

Here is what we can assume about you. You are a US citizen, coming to Canada on a 6-month visitor visa, during your stay you plan to get married, then return home to pick up some things and then come back to Canada on a permanent basis. Correct?

From the sounds of it you want to apply for permanent residency, you need to read through all of this -

Make sure that your visitor visa does not apply in the process of applying for your residency, immigration does not like that.

This is a compliated process, and we are here to help... but you need to do the basic reading first because no one can really direct you through the entire process - unless you choose to hire a lawyer of consultant, and they are expensive.
