Photocopied documents

If the checklist only asks for a photocopy of the birth certificate and passport. Does the photocopy need to be certified? I am just wondering because online it says to certify photocopies but at the same time it says to follow the checklist which does not specify to certify the photocopy. Anyone have experience with this?

Normal copies are fine if the checklist doesn't specify a certified copy. Usually the only thing that needs to be certified are document translations. If the birth certificate isn't in English or French and/or there's no option to get an international birth certificate that has international languages included, then you must make certified translations of it, and same goes for any other official documents they ask for.

Otherwise normal copies that one can make at home are okay. All of our documents were homebrew copies except for my police certificates that I had to translate and certify said translations (my country issues international birth certificates upon request so I was good when it came to that).

In my country you can't get a certified ("official" as we call them) translation without an affidavit. You go to certified court translators and once all is said and done each document contains: translation of the document, original document, affidavit made by the translator saying that they are certified to make translations including their info and license number etc as well as that this is a true copy. These are all bound together in a special way and also have an official government seal on them.

On the CIC website it says:
You must send the following for any document that is not in English or French, unless otherwise stated on your document checklist:

the English or French translation; and
an affidavit from the person who completed the translation (see below for details); and
a certified copy of the original document.

Getting the translation and affidavit for the translation is no problem. I'm just worried about getting certified true copies as these are legal documents from Ukraine. Would I need to also get certified true copies of the original documents or could I just send photocopies of the original
