Photo for the study permit - so confused...

The requirements for the photo for a Canadian study permit mentions that the head size must be between 31mm and 36mm from chin to crown.

Well, whenever I create a photo with one of those online services (like idphoto4you.com), the final result yields a much bigger head on the computer screen than between 31-36 mm.

Is the size for when they print it out, or should I measure the actual size on the screen to fit within the required size?

I feel incredibly stupid.

Mumfi that is an actual answer, get it done from the market. Saving yourself a few bucks now can cost you a lot during the Visa Process.

If 100 % of the people did it "from the market", then that would be the correct answer. However, if there is a way to do this by yourself, then this is the answer I want to be given. It's sunday evening, nothing is open.

A lot of VAC's like the New Delhi VAC have the option of having your photo taken with the correct specification at a reasonable rate.

I would suggest that if possible

So why not wait for the Monday morning? It hardly takes 15 minutes. Its always advisable to get it done from a reputed professional photographer as you can be most certain there would be no issues with it. In case your photo is not up to the mark, at minimum CIC will ask you to resubmit your photo as per their standards, or worse, doubt your intentions and reject your visa.

Warm Regards

Well, for all I know the photographer might have the same question as I. "Do you want the the head from chin to crown to be 31-36 mm on the screen or what? Doesn't that depend on the screen?" and so forth.

So. does anyone anywhere know what exactly they mean by this?

Are you applying on-line or on paper? Please clarify. If its on-line then there are different instructions. If its on paper its different. At the end of the day, they WILL take biometrics and a photo at the VAC. even if you apply on-line.

Photographers at the VAC know how it should be taken. Also other photographers are aware of specific visa requirements. I wish I could help you other than this, but i myself went to a photographer. Anyone who did it by him/herself, please let Mumfi know.

I'm obviously applying online. There is no VAC in my country and I need no biometrics taken, just this picture....

Mate, even if you "obviously" apply online, most countries have a VAC and people have to go to the VAC to give their biometrics.

You must understand that forum members are here answering voluntarily, not through paid work. We try to be as nice as possible, but any member or newbie must first present their query as clearly as possible for us to give a suggestion. Most people here have assumed that you live in a place which has VAC and a nice enough photo studio who know what a "Canada Visa Photo" is. Because that's what most of us have done, gone to a studio and asked them to take a Canada visa photo for us.

Also when you apply on-line, the digital photo upload button has a small "?" sign beside it which gives you the digital photo specs in pixels. I am giving you the pixel dimensions here . Height 540 pixels by Width 420 pixels. Please remember you have to follow the ration of 540:420 so you can have a picture of 1080:840 or 1620:1260.

All other requirements are the same as a digital photo. About the chin and head dimensions, photo should include your head from the top to just include the neck. Not shoulders. So if you crop your photo upto the neck then its ok.

If you are a male then open your tie button and corp to the next closed button. Thats it. Do NOT include shoulders. I presume you have the visa photo requirements digital brochure handy. If not just go into google and search "cic Visa application photo guidance" and look for the .pdf file.
