Hi, I am from the philippines and have been living here with my canadian boyfriend for more than a year now. We have a 2 year rental contract in both our names. We are considering using common law to Canada rather than marriage. I am just wondering if there is anyone here who actually tried or succeeded from Philippines to Canada using the common-law route?
My concern is that common law is not recognized in the Philippines. Will it be a problem?

Hi

It doesn't matter whether it's recognized in the Philippines. Canadian Immigration, Canadian law.

If you have sufficient evidence to back up your common law status go for it!

For evidence we have our 2 year rental contract, joint receipts for household purchases, facebook chats starting from May 2013, facebook posts, photos, comments also from May 2013 to present, receipts of money sent to me via paypal and western union (and we will be doing a joint bank account soon), we also have a jointly named group on facebook and jointly named Youtube account.
We also plan to get 2 or 3 letters of support.

A concern is that we both do not have friends or family here. We are not sociable type. All our photos are just us together at home and at places we visited Only my brother visited once for about a week and so we have some photos with him too.
We are very homebody type

You will be writing a letter to talk about your relationship. There you can talk about the progression of your relationship to where it is today. You can mention how you are homebodies but it will be strange to not have some pictures but not critical if the rest of your evidence is strong. Talk about the practical arrangements like banking, insurance etc. are you named in your partner health benefits or insurance? Those are the ordinary life moments that make a relationship real.

Hi, thank you for the tips. We do have lots of photos to show and many posted on facebook which i would think are even better because they show comments from our facebook friends and family and they show date posted. It is just that all the photos are all of us together with no other people but they are not all the same. they show our activity at home, like baking, eating, exercising together, christmas and birthdays together, showing cake and tree etc..

Does the letter explaining the relationship need to be hand written and also I am tagalog, english not very good, can i write it out in tagalog and then translate it to my boyfriend in english? also can it be made more like a story book with captioned photos included.

no we have no life insurance.. but maybe he will try to get some

Hi sis :) same with me mostly our photos are only the 2 of us. Better typewritten so its easier for the VO to read and for you to make. You already made a post here written in english, so I know you can do it, you can write explain it in english ;D but yes if it is easier for you, write it in our language and have your partner translate it.

By the way, where do you live in philippines? I am from Pasig, Manila. ;)
