I am on maintained status (study permit) and awaiting an extension of my study permit. My spouse is on SOWP which we applied for extension together with my study permit. She’s been given a WP EXT PGWP, pending the issuance of the new SOWP.
My question is, when I am applying for my pgwp, must I apply for her open work permit too? I know it’s possible to have two applications in the system. I just need some clarification and if anybody has been in this situation and how they went about it.

Hi,

Just to share , yes you need to apply for her work permit extension.. you can submit your application together but don’t forget to add your documents in your wife’s client information. Think it like at the end your applications will get separate. Where they will check your client information for your PGWP and at the same time they will check your documents and your wife’s documents in her profile for her open work permit extension.

Hi,

Did you get your PGWP and SOWP approved?

Me and my husband are on implied status as we applied for a study permit extension. We are expecting to apply for my PGWP and then the SOWP.
How did you do yours?

If I apply for PGWP alone first, can I apply SOWP later?

In the PGWP application it asks whether the main applicant have a job offer. What do you answer that with? I already have an offer.

Hi,

I believe you can apply first and then apply for the SOWP afterwards.

Imstill awaiting issuance of PGWp having applied in March.

I heard about the job offer thing where the main applicant should have a job offer in order for the other applicant (SOWP) to be issued permit. Doesn’t make sense to me that they expect a recent graduate applying for pgwp to already have a job offer before applying for themselves and their spouse.
Honestly, I don’t recall the part of the application that asks whether I had a job offer. If there was a question like that, I must have said No.

A related question:
My study permit expires in Dec 2024 but my program is over and my transcript has already been issued. So I stopped working. I have a job offer now, which I can start only after getting the temporary work permit. My wife's OWP is expiring in Sep 2024. So I am confused about applying for PGWP first and then SOWP extension with study permit extension for my kids, OR apply together. Since I haven't started my full-time job yet, I don't have any payslips. Just to set the context, I am working part-time for a company in the US remotely, but the new offer is from a Canadian company.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

How are you getting paid by this employer? Through a Canadian entity?

So your spouse doesn’t qualify for SOWP until you have 3 pay stubs from your Canadian job.
I have worked part-time with a Canadian employer until June 2024. Will those pay stubs be enough?

Or, does that mean I should just apply for myself now, and then apply for my spouse? The problem is that my wife has her work permit valid till mid-September, so we need to submit for an extension before that. In the best-case scenario, I was planning to apply together and then raise a web form to submit the payslips. Will that work?

Technically you need to show pay stubs to show that you are employed and can support a spouse in Canada which is why current pay stubs are typically what you need to submit. You can attempt to apply without the pay stubs but no guarantee it will be approved. Will you have proof of 3 pay stubs before her WP expires?

No, I won't have 3 pay stubs before her OWP expires. I will have one pay stub by early September. In that case, the best option I can think of is to apply for my PGWP now, and get one bi-weekly pay stub by early September and apply for her OWP extension before it expires. Isn't it?

I read that in the case of separate application for Spouse's OWP extension while PGWP application is in process, they will refuse it if the PGWP is not approved at the time of processing the SOWP. Is that true?

But most of the people I talked to applied together, which is why I am concerned. Do I have any other option?
