Hi,

I am settling in Canada and will have unaccompanied goods to follow. This is not my first landing trip but it is my first time to settle for 12 months. In the declaration card i will be marking yes for the unacompanied goods statement. Withe regards to the residents of Canada section where the value of goods purchased or received abroad, what should I input in this case since I will be bringing along all my personal effects. Should the amount be 0?

Please help

Are you in fact, a "resident" of Canada? This doesn't mean "PR". It means are you already actually living here.

If in doubt, say that you exceed the exemptions, regardless of selecting Part B or C, if in fact you are actually carrying more than the allowed amount. Then sort it out in Customs secondary inspection. You'll be sent there anyway to handle the unaccompanied goods declaration.

My personal experience is that it's by far the safest way to deal with CBSA. When I first settled, we were carrying more that the exemption amount of alcohol in our luggage. They said something along the lines of "just go.." and let us off any duty. They had already spent enough time sorting out the B4s.
