Permanent residency vs Citizenship

Dear All,

I am from India. To the best of my knowledge, India does not offer dual citizenship. My question is, is it possible to stay in Canada permanently as a 'Permanent Resident' OR after 2 years, is it compulsory to apply for citizenship?

India does. It is called OCI. https://www.blsindia-canada.com/ocihome.php

Its upto you to whether you want to be Canadian Citizen or not. If you don't wish to be a Canadian Citizen than you can live on PR as long as you want.

You will have to stay in Canada for 4 years within 6 years (Or whatever the length is) to retain Canadian PR. If you did meet this (among other requirements) you can retain PR without getting citizenship. If you don't you could lose your PR.

No such thing as "Renew your PR status". PR status doesn't expire(unless you don't meet minimum resident requirement) but PR card does. All she has to do is renew his PR card.

FYI:

You may lose your permanent resident status if:
•An adjudicator determines that you are no longer a permanent resident following an inquiry
•A visa officer determines you do not meet the required residency when you apply for a permanent resident travel document or temporary resident travel document.

You may lose your permanent resident status in one of the ways described above if:
•you do not live in Canada for two out of five years;
•you are convicted of a serious crime and told to leave Canada; or
•you become a Canadian citizen.

You do not lose your permanent resident status if your PR card expires

I would like to add a few things to what lampbreaker has already said.

As an OCI :

1) You CAN visit/stay in India for an indefinite duration.

2) You CAN study, start a business or work in India. [You will be treated in par with other NRIs]

3) You CAN inherit agricultural property but CANNOT buy/sell them!

4) You CANNOT run for office of the President/Vice-president or a government servant position.

5) You CANNOT hold an Indian Passport.
