Hi,

I'm a permanent resident card holder here in AB and will be going out of the country. The expiration date of my PR card is 2019. For how long can I stay out of the country? Can I stay out of the country for like 8-9 months?

Please help!!

Thank you,

Jeremie

yes. there is no set rule for how long you can stay out of the country for. you are free to travel when, where and for how long you want. the only rule you need to follow is regarding your residency obligations for maintaining pr. you must be living in canada for 2 out of 5 years i believe. so assuming you'll be back in canada long term after your trip, 8-9 months isn't going to affect your status. your card is valid until 2019, so you won't have issues using it unless it expires.

Re: Pemanent Resident card holder / Family sponsorship

Sounds good!!! thanks for your quick response, Appreciate it. I'm going for parental leave, that is why.

another question is,

If my wife who is out of the country (not PR yet) will give birth in September. Can I pass my application for family sponsorship while I'm away. my plan is to send it to someone here so that person can send it to CIC. So when I get back from vacation, I don't need to wait longer to get it approve? Any thoughts on this one?

Thank you

No. Since you are not a Canadian citizen, you must submit the application while you are in (and remain in) Canada. CIC will have access to CBSA records, showing if you are in/out of Canada. You do NOT want to have someone submit the application on your behalf!

So my vacation is from October to June. Can I come back here around February and submit it myself? then go back again to the country where my Wife and my daughter to be are? or should I stay here in Canada while the papers are in process?

You must remain in Canada for the duration of the process. You can probably take a brief trip, but nothing more than a week or two at most.

Thanks for all the info. I read about it at some point that I have to stay while papers are in process, just looking for other options I can take advantage of. Thank you
