HI, I've read in previous posts that CIC will ask for a passport. I am sponsoring (outland) my common-law-husband from the US. I have just recently received a letter from the Pilot Ottawa Office asking for pictures of my husband's son even though he is not accompanying him to Canada. That is fine, no problem. My question is: My husband does not have a U.S passport, but he has an enhanced driver's licence. Will they be asking for a passport or will they accept the enhanced driver's licence? If he has to get a passport, does he need both the passport book and passport card? Thank you so much.

it says somewhere on the guideline ( can not find it, but I remember it) that every applicant will need a valid passport to apply for PR. Once you get the COPR, it will have a passport number, and the COPR itself will say " not valid for travel" as you need to travel on a passport....

So I'm surprised that you have not been asked for a passport already, as it's normally part of the process...

No worries - COPR means Confirmation of Permanent Residence. Once your file is approved, since your husband is from a visa-exempt country, they won't probably ask for the passport itself, but for the copy of it. They will issue the COPR and send it to whatever address you put in your application, and with that, and the passport, your husband will be able to cross the border and land. The COPR has the passport number on it, so it's important that it's the same....

What I would do is get the passport as soon as possible, and send a copy/scan to your Visa Office, if you have been approved as a sponsor. If you have not been approved yet, and you have no file number, wait until Mississauga contacts you, otherwise it might get lost.

About the passport or the passport card - I have no idea about that, as I am not from the US, and I don't know what a passport card is... but a "normal passport" should be enough. As a current US pasport holder, the card and the passport are two separate documents and essentially have the same function ( for travel) but the card itself is more limited ( not for air travel) I was looking at this option when I renewed mine in February. In my opinion, a passport would the best option.
