I am planning to apply for study permit for Fall-17 within this month for 2 years MS program. My passport will expire in 13th August 2018. Do I have to renew passport to get visa/ study permit ?

If you are applying now, you will be eligible to get TRV/SP upto 13 Aug, 2018.

Yes, you will have to apply for an extension with a valid passport.

I was on a similar situation and decided to just get a new passport. I read about it and got recommendations to better get a new passport. Otherwise you will have to go through the process again and pay fees, etc., you may even get refused based on whatever can happen while you are in Canada. Hope this helps. Regards
