Hi.

I have successfully received my PR visa stamped with the visa expiry date of Oct 2018
My passport expires mid Jan 2019 and as per the 6 months rule I would need to fly before July 2018 which is in the next few days.

If I do go ahead and renew my passport now, would the PR visa be still valid on the old passport or do I need to re stamp the PR visa again on the new renewed passport. If so, how long would the entire process take to get it re stamped

I chose to fly end of August or early September as I have few commitments pending before I leave and a soft landing is not possible for me. I'm in a touch and go situation.

no problem in case you renew your passport.
this seems to be similar case when a person is having 10 year visa in old passport .he/she can still travel to that country in case his passport number changes. please keep all your passports with you when u travel to canada

I called up the VFS office and they told me that the visa would not be valid if I renew it but as far as i'm sure its either carrying both passports or re stamping the new one

Incorrect details. The PR VISA is not a PR itself, its one time landing VISA and it should be on the new passport only.

@sabhlok2812 is correct.

Read this link: https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/ircc/migration/ircc/english/resources/manuals/enf/enf04-eng.pdf

Refer 13.18 - "If a valid visa inside an expired document is presented at the POE along with a valid passport or travel document, the visa is considered valid."

VFS office has mentioned, that VISA will not be valid. He should not take a chance here. its a matter of Immigration. Do you think, the Immigration officer will go through this document.

I would expect immigration officer to know this 100% - Its written clearly in black and white in this doc. Further this is such a common thing and they would know this for sure.I myself have few visas on my old passport which are still valid and I travel with my current passport - I carry both the passports and it always works. It should not be any different in this case. The same information is shared on multiple threads on this forum as well.

I would take any information shared by untrained VFS call center with a pinch of salt.

Please note that , you land with Temporary PR Visa or COPR documents ...
It doesnt matter that he visa is in new passport or old passport ... i have US business still valid which is in my expired passport ... i still travel to US with my new passport ...

You can renew your passport when term comes and you need to carry all the passport while traveling .. thats all.

Non expired Visas are valid in expired passports. It has always been this way.
So, you mean, VFS office is not speaking truth. The poster has mentioned, VFS office is asking for newer Passport.

I called the VFS again and was told to get it re stamped in the new renewed passport(if I chose to renew it); I put forward the argument stating that the visa itself would be still valid and I would fly before that; they asked me to write to the delhi-im-enquiry id I sent an email to them and also separately wrote to CPC-CTD-Ottawa explaining them the case; awaiting for their reply now. The fact that I have just under 10 days to fly if i need to do it now and haven't booked my tickets as yet is stressing me out; would wait for a couple of days more to check a revert.

I received an email finally from the High commission stating that I can travel with the old passport as they don't follow the 6 months rule but to check with the airlines. They also said that if I choose to renew my passport, I need to submit both passports(old and new) along with my COPR copies to get the visa re stamped on the new passport. I would have to pay the visa fees of CAD 30 and send them a copy of the receipt.

I'm curious to know what you opted further and how it helped you as I'm exactly in same situation now. Please do reply so that I can plan my travel accordingly. Thanks.
