Passport Expiry

I just received this letter yesterday on myCIC.

[SIZE=11px]Dear Sir/Madam,

This is in reference to the permanent resident application you submitted.

Please note that your passport and/or the passport of your dependent(s) is set to expire within the next 12 months or has expired. In order to minimize delays, please remember to provide us with a copy when you have renewed your passport.

You may submit a valid copy of your passport through our client web form;
https://secure.cic.gc.ca/enquiries-renseignements/canada-case-cas-eng.aspx

Or you may submit through email;
CPC-CTD-Ottawa@cic.gc.ca[/SIZE]

My background check changed to in progress on 24th June 2016.

My passport expires on 3rd March 2017. So, since I got this letter, do I need to renew my Passport now? (it will take one month to get my passport renewed)

Yes, you need to get it renewed now.

Isn't the min required validity is 6 months? Why did they highlight "12 months" period?

My friend sent passport which was expiring in 4 months, there wasn't any issue at all.

However, if you uncomfortable or hesitate you can renewed it, just to be on the safe side.

For some people it's 6, for other's it's 12. When you're sent your PPR, the email will tell you the minimum validity.

Just because this worked for one person, does not mean that it will work for everyone. It's entirely at the discretion of the VO.

I've applied for my passport renewal but the issue is that it will take approximately 45 days to receive the new passport. Would that be a problem or cause delay in receiving my PPR?

To be safe, it is better for me to upload the passport renewal application and explain that it would take 45 days to receive my passport, right?
