Don't think it will end any time soon. The old system isn't fair either. GTA applicants had a geographically advantage over those furthest away from GTA. On top of that, only the rich will be able to afford to spend hundreds of extra dollars for a special service to get their papers waiting at CIC's door overnight before official opening day. Spending extra money to get in front of the line is no fair to those who can't afford to spend the extra money. I suppose you are okay with a patient spending a few extra dollars so he/she can get medical service from a specialist before you while you wait 6 month or more to see one.

The lottery system allows everyone regardless of income, geographically location, equal chances to sponsor their parents into Canada. This is probably the only thing the Liberal government actually did right.

No earlier than October 2019 when Trudeau is going to loose his post, I think.
Even if the Trudeau government lost the 2019 election, the next government is not going to bring back first come first serve basis. If anything, maybe (unlikely) they may reduce the cap back to 5000 from current 10000.

We don't know if / when it will end.

If the lottery is stopped and they go back to FIFO (first in, first out) - then everyone will just go back to complaining about how unfair that system is since it's entirely based on when your particular courier arrives at the IRCC office with your application package. Back when the FIFO process was in place, there were many people on this forum calling for a lottery system to make it more fair (i.e. random selection) and a petition to switch to a lottery system was launched from here. People can place all the blame on Trudeau if they want to - however the reality is that most of the people on this forum who didn't make the cut under FIFO were asking for a lottery system. Well the Liberals listened - and everyone got their lottery system. Now everyone thinks that's unfair. (And no - not a Trudeau supporter - just stating the facts.)

I know some people want caps removed. Sure - that can happen. Then we can go back to the days of 9+ years processing for parent/grandparent applications.

No matter what approach is in place - someone is going to lose out and think it's unfair.

but, in lottery system, what if someoneś parents file not selected for next 10 years, thats also not fair. parents will be aged. 2017 onwards, 1 out of 9 applicant gets selected , so 10 percent chances, if cap reduced to 5000 then 5 percent chances.

Same thing was happening with the FIFO/courier system before the lottery was introduced. People had tried each year and never made the cap since they weren't in the first group of applications that arrived. It's really not that different. With the lottery it's random. With FIFO it's a courier race. And the bad thing with FIFO, was that people were spending thousands of dollars to put their applications together and pay for couriers - only to miss the cap. At least with the lottery you're not losing thousands of dollars if you're not selected. Either way, there are only a specific number of spots and people were losing out year after year.

Before the cap, many people were waiting over a decade for their parents' application to be processed and to be reunited. Everyone felt that was unacceptable and there were many petitions / complaints to MPs - so the cap was introduced.

People are angry with the lottery system because that's what's in place now. However when the FIFO system was in place - everyone thought that was the worst thing ever (and many wanted a lottery). And before the cap & FIFO, everyone said processing took far too long. Again, no matter what the approach - there are going to be a significant group of people who are unhappy.

This new system, believe it or not, is better, because in the old system, people were paying couriers hundreds of dollars to get in front of the line, there was a massive backlog where the government even had to pause PGP sponsorships completely for two years just to reduce the backlog, and frankly it's pretty unfair for someone living in Ontario to be able to get their applications in before everyone else just because they're geographically closer to the immigration office.

At least this way, literally every single person has an equal chance of getting a shot, even if that chance is a small one. Also you can just get your parents a super visa, that allows them to stay here up to 2 years.

The lottery system is working fine. The cap needs to stay as well since Canadians don’t want to pay more for medicals of immigrants’ old parents. Only thing that needs to be added is to give higher weights in lottry chance when people applied for parents sponsorship before. Like maybe adding one more chance to the lottery selection for every year you participated.

I have no horse in this race - but I agree with this.

The courier system (FIFO) was horrible. Lots of money being spent on failed applications, advantages depending on what part of the country you were located in (so people were flying to Ontario just to courier their application from there), huge stress over which courier company to pick, etc.
