SHARP : To which university you applied and what are your credentials ?? which able you to get scholarship in Canada .That's a news for me that Canadian universities offer any scholarship
Dear Waqar,

I have got admission in the MASc Mechatronics Engineering Program at Simon Fraser University. Regarding scholarship, I don't know about you but since I am a Graduate level (Masters) student, I will tell you about that.

At Master's level, there are two types of degrees: Masters by course work and Masters by Research. There is a possibility of scholarship for only the latter. At Graduate level, Research & admissions are controlled by Professors, not Universities. So, you have to impress the Professor. Impress a little, you get admission; impress a bit more, you'll get scholarship as well.

My score in Bachelor degree was 81 % but note that Professors, while considering the GPA or other tests (including GRE if you've taken it) that you score, don't give it much weight because it is useless for them. They want to see how well you can do research. So if you can prove you research potential and capabilities, you can qualify and Alhamdulillah that's how I got it.

In the end, I pray that I and you all get Visa so the scholarship can be availed InshAllah.

Hope this helps.

Sharp ,

Allah na karay, If we defer our semesters, do we have to apply again for the visa ? or wait for our visa to arrive and once we get our visa for september session, can we request CIC to issue us a visa with new deadlines?

Any idea about how deferral works?

No, if we defer, we don't have to reapply. Basically, deferring is you requesting your Uni to to transfer your admission to the next available term. Here, each uni might have different policy as to how technical details work.

According to my knowledge, there are 2 cases: first, CIC realizes that you can't make in time for your semester and ask for a revised Letter of Acceptance itself, which you obtain by deferring your admission to the next term; second, they don't and you obtain the revised LOA yourself.

With the second case, currently, I am not sure whether you have to inform CIC or not. Why? Because, CIC doesn't issue you a study permit at first. They just issue you a letter of Introduction, which has a deadline, with in which you can travel to Canada and obtain a Study Permit from the Point of Entry when you actually land there. So, you can just show the revised Letter of Acceptance to the border immigration office. Although, I think that the applicable case, but I still need to confirm it.

One more thing to add to above reply,

If you are in a research program, tell your supervisor first about the delay and ask about what to do.

In my case, my supervisor has asked me to drop courses in the first term, so that I may be able to join a bit later without missing classes. This has given us a few more day to think about deferment.

Sharp,

Thank you for your reply. I'm in a taught masters program, and i have informed my program director. She said that i shall wait for a few more days for the visa and i can join the program (physically present to attend the class) latest by 18th. She has also agreed to write me a visa assistance letter which i can send to CHC Islamabad. In the worst case scenario, she said i can defer my enrollment to next term (January).

I'm relieved to hear from you that we won't have to go through the hell of applying again. It's great if we get letter of introduction and send CHC Islamabad our revised offer letter, and get our study permit at entry port in Canada.

However, i am a bit confused. if CHC only gives us a letter of introduction then what do they require the passport for? are you sure they won't stamp our visa (with deadlines) in our passports. Those of you who have received their visa, can anyone of you kindly elaborate on this?

In the meanwhile, lets wait and keep praying.

I guess they require our passport to issue a Temporary Resident Visa. The actual study permit or work permit is issued when you land there.

Sharp,

Thank you so much ! however, the mystery still remains, why do they require our passports, why can't we just be issued Letter of Introduction and embark on our journeys?

There are two things: 1) Temporary Resident Visa 2) Study Permit. Some nationalities do not require a TRV to visit Canada, while Pakistanis do. However, a TRV does not allow you to study in Canada, for example, Even US citizens do need a Study permit if the relevant program is longer than 6 months.

If you remember, when we submitted our application, we were asked to fill two forms. One was a TRV form and the other was a Study Permit form. So, when our application is approved InshAllah, we will get a TRV stamped on our Passport and SP will be issued when we land there.

Uni of Winnipeg has a nice document here. It tells that you need to have a valid TRV to enter Canada and be issued a SP.

I did not fill a TRV. I had called Gerry's centre to confirm about it. They said i only need to apply for study permit. He said, if that would be approved, CIC will issue us a TRV to students until they get study permit.
