I believe they would prefer paper clips instead of staples.

Our lawyer said CIC doesn't like staples and the fewer paper clips/binder clips, the better. The officers reorder the application according to their own methods and it annoys them to have to pull out staples etc. She's heard this directly from CIC officers at meetings, conferences, etc.

We ended up using paper clips on the forms and staples on the supporting docs where it was unlikely that they would ever need to be separated into single sheets. For example, notarised documents were sent to us already stapled, so we left them as supplied.

There is a thing called "staple remover". I know taking out staples is annoying, but they shouldn't give more priority to people who didn't use it. If they would, they should've included this rule in the guidelines.

Not "priority" per se. But given that it's not surprising that it staples "annoy" them, then ask yourself what frame of mind would you like your VO to be in when he/she takes his/her "first look" at your application? Personally, I prefer NOT annoyed.

Well, it's part of their job to take out staples, if there are any. I'd say with or without staples, the mood of the VO can't change the strength of proofs that one includes in their application. :D

Anyhow, let me see how my staples would change the VO's mood :p

This.

Not drawing any wider conclusions, but just an observation: I had a total of 2 binder clips and 4 paper clips in my application. DH's sponsorship got approved 11 days after receipt. Just my opinion, but I think if the officer had to remove 200+ staples just to organize the file, it would have taken longer...though of course, in the end it would have been approved anyway. Anyway, advice is for OP who hasn't sent in his/her application yet.

This is kind of funny because on the document checklist (or at least the one we have) it says near the bottom of the page "Two photos of the applicant .... Insert photos in a separate envelope and staple envelope to the Schedule A - Background/Declaration (IMM 5669) form ....."

Are we to assume that this is the only staple they want to see or should that also be paper clipped as opposed to stapled?

I work in an office and have to use these horrible things. Trust me, they are NOT pleasant plus, just me in an office, it pisses me off having to take the staples out. Imagine a VO having to take out 200 staples about 10 times a day. You will have one pissed off VO and honestly, they have the power to deny your spouse. That's how I look at it. It's just like at border patrol, you aren't going to say "I want to go to your country cuz I'm Canadian/American/Whatever and I'm allowed and I can stay 6 months" They will turn you around so fast you won't know where the sun is.

For sure, 200 staples 10 times a day is really annoying. Well, I just hope they'll treat my app right. I don't think I have more than 10 staples anyway. :D :D

And yea, if I would to do this app again, I wouldn't use staples. So for the OP, yes, use paper clips instead.

Lame video....but you will notice around the 7 minute mark the woman is going to place unstapled and un paper clipped papers in her envelope.

The country specific guide I used (Africa)says:

Attach your papers to documents(paper clips will do).

I couldn't imagine not only having to open a bunch of envelopes but then on top of it removing a wack of staples 8 hours a day. Okay not 8 it is the government we are talking about after all. None the less the staples would get old, fast.

Maybe they can bring in some FSW's to do their staples for them. Just a thought :p
