I applied February 2012, but due to complications, I was finally approved for sponsor Oct 4th, I owe taxes also and was approved as sponsor. The only thing that restricts you from being sponsored is if you are on welfare or you claimed bankruptcy or you have criminal record.

I was told first my a CBSA officer
CBSA's job isnt to give you any useful advice, and i wouldnt trust them to tell the truth since they are allowed to lie as part of their job. Their job is to deport you or keep you out of the country, or catch you stuff you shouldnt have. Thats it. They are not there to help you in anyway. I would never take advice from them at all.

well if he owes then they will take it from his taxes.....they do that to me every year....i don't get anything back, they just use it to pay off what I owe, so they will do the same to him but i truly don't believe he will have a problem........if he does, then you can come and kick me ok? :)

That's a significant debt..

They say you can't be undischarged bankrupt, or on social assistance. You do sign a form that permits them to communicate with other agencies. And there is a section in the IRPA (immigration and refugee protection act) that states the sponsor cannot be indebted to the crown...but I don't think the tax debt will affect you. With a larger sum like that, it might. I would risk it -- as long as you know you can manage and not declare bankruptcy...

I'm being garnished 30% I don't know if I already said that next question is if we do go ahead get married does she have to leave Canada back to where she came from then reenter Canada again. Her visa is almost up or does she have to stay until a decision is made up?

Well, no. She can apply to extend her visitor visa while she is here. That does give her implied visitor status until they decide.

Then you have the classic question: inland or outland. Inland she is supposed to stay until they decide. She can request an open work permit, and she can work. Outland allows her to come and go more freely, but she has to maintain her visitor status, if she chooses to stay in Canada.

Both have pros and cons. They cost the same. The OWP is an extra $255.

That said, if you marry, your debt is her debt... something to think about.

Also, getting married quick can be a red flag to immigration. Does she have all the paperwork required? Have you checked the requirements?

Who isn’t eligible to sponsor a relative
You may not be able to sponsor a relative if you:

  • are in prison
  • have not paid your alimony or child support payments
  • have declared bankruptcy and haven’t been released from it yet
  • got social assistance for reasons other than being disabled
  • didn’t pay back an immigration loan, made late payments or missed payments
  • sponsored another relative in the past and didn’t meet the terms of the sponsorship agreementwere convicted of a violent crime, any offence against a relative or any sexual offence, depending on details of the case, such as:
    • the type of offence
    • how long ago it was
    • whether a record suspension was issued (formerly called “pardons” in Canada)
Other things not on this list may stop you from being able to sponsor a relative.

Since you were in receipt of Social Services this could potentially prohibit you from sponsoring a person and coupled with the fact that you owe...

Hi,

Does anyone know if they deny for owing social services.

I guess I should elaborate on my situation... I was previously married in 2011 and we tried to get him here and I was eligible to sponsor with this debt from 2008, where things have changed since then is I was charged for it (7 years later) and given a conditional discharge in 2014. I have completed my probation etc since 2015 and just have restitution to pay which I am trying to get a loan to take care of this month...
I am gonna cal cic today because I do not want this lawyer to make us pay for and do things we do not need to do...
