Oh July 1 was a date the lawyer mentioned that since that time ou couldn't submit Option C or something like that. As I am not canadian or the spouse I wasn't very familiar with what he was referring to but surely my husband was as he was the one who brought that up.
As to my lawyer being stupid or incompetent - the last lawyer said my spouse could file for bankruptcy and that it would take 9 months to be removed from his record. Someone told me today that it would take years to be removed and also the CIC office said that bankruptcy would prevent a spouse from filing so not sure what the lawyer had in mind to suggest that or if her timeframe is indeed correct. Does anyone know. Unless she's really not a subject matter expert!

Wow. that's awesome news. did you submit option c and did they ask you anything about the taxes at all

Yes, I submitted Option C. I had to. It was in February 2011. They never asked me about the taxes. The night before the appeal in June 2012 (my husband was denied visa in November 2011), I received a letter from Revenue Canada informing me that if I did not pay them the amount due, they would take some sort of action against me. In court, I told the Ministry's counsel and the judge about that letter. I said it was because of Immigration Canada I owe so much taxes. I had to work 3 jobs 7 days a week to pay for the appeal, visit my husband and have someone at my house with my son during my absence. I had to make much more money to cover all the extra expenses previously mentioned.

Honestly I think you're not understanding the info the lawyer is telling you. 9 months is what it takes to be discharged from bankruptcy. It will stay on your credit for 6-7 years. And yes it would effect your sponsorship, especially for the 9 months, until you are discharged. I believe after you are discharged it is fine. But you would have to find out for sure.

I owed revenue canada about 400 bucks and I was told I had to pay it to be approved, so i paid it before we sent in the app to avoid any problems.
So i agree i think its best to pay it first if you owe anything, because it may cause delays or refusal.

Thanks everyone for your advice especially the bit on the bankruptcy and the time it takes to be discharged and also how long it remains on your credit. The lawyer hadn't really explained it in detail so thanks for explaining

Hi Leisa,

Quick question... who told you to pay the $400 before you sent in your app? Did it come from CIC, or was it advice from a concultant/lawyer etc? I totally agree that for those with such a small amount then it is best to pay it off first, but I am sure those who are asking probably have 1-2 extra 0's on that figure, lol.
Thanks.

I was told first my a CBSA officer(although some things they told us didnt match up with what other cbsa officers told us, so who knows about them lol, and than by our immigration consultant before we sent in the application.

lol. wowzers! thats alot of money owed to revenue canada, but im sure if theres reasoning behind it, it must be a different rule because that would just seem ridiculous.

Sometimes no good reason really. My sister (has nothing to do with immigration :p ) had a baby last Nov, filed taxes like you're supposed to in April and the Government found out she's Common Law... even though they filed together before and his name is on the birth certificate and told her they overpaid her and she has to pay them back. I believe they said 5 grand. So she's not getting ANYTHING from CRA, no gst, no baby bonus, nada. She'll have it all paid off by the time my niece is 1 and three months. *shakes head*

thats what happened when we filed common-law too.
i got a bill in the mail saying i owe them back for the past 2 years or something stupid like that. so i owed like 400 something.
and than last week i just got another letter saying now my common-law owes them money too. so now he owes them 55 bucks.
*thumbs down!*

that really sucks! thats alot to pay back when you have a new baby!!

So we just received sponsor approval in the mail today. My partner owes a decent amount in taxes, so I can confirm that you can get approved anyway.

Good luck.

I'm being hopeful. My husband doens't owe taxes, the goverment owes him tons of money, which I don't think it really matters. The fact is that he didn't do taxes until recently. I guess I'll find out too in some weeks.

Congrats Rachiy. When I called back CIC on Fri. the agent told me that owing of taxes wasn't on their list of restrictions and the agent even emailed me a document as it relates to everythng about spousal sponsorship and the restriction bars etc. I would therefore be suprised if they tell you one thing and do another so the fact that you and others got approved while owing taxes and they confirmed even though another agent said otherwise, then I will go ahead. However, I will submit an extension to stay in the meantime my spouse gets his paperwork together before the stamp in my passport expires as I arrived on a visitor's visa so I guess I have to ensure I am not illegal here beforf sending in my sponsorhip application.

Hi. I really, need helps with this. How do you explain this to the cic when you owe taxes. Like i am about to be sponsored. The only thing we dont have is the option c because ahe owes. Help pls!!

You can still get option C when you owe taxes. It will just show the amount owing on it.
