Overstaying / coming back.

I accidentally overstayed in Canada for a bit less than 4 months, I didn't receive my visa in the mail, in the past I received them, so when I emailed them to check on it, they advised me It had run out in December, it's now March. Therefore a week after I received that email I booked flights and came back to the UK. It took some time to gather funds but I left on my own accord.

The person in the email said that I should leave asap to avoid a removal order and if I got one I'd need authorization to return. I would have applied in those 90 days but since I had no idea I couldn't. I sent my application by mail.

I'd like to return in 1 year and 2 months to visit my friends, I can bring proof of being in education, having a job, enough funds and the email which I received from CIC and the dates I purchased tickets, plus the other 2 paper visas I had received.

How likely is it that'd I would be able to return? It was an honest mistake which I regret and have certainly learned from..

Whether you need an ARC or not to re-enter Canada depends on what information you received in the email.
In most cases, you don't need an ARC unless Deportation Orders were issued.
Read here:

Would I be subject to normal immigration regulations since I didn't receive any removal order and didn't exceed the overstay by more than 180 days? I made an honest mistake, I feel so worried and sad to be turned away for such a silly mistake..

Well, you need to apply and ensure you present all the facts to CIC. If you never received a removal/deportation order, chances are you might be admitted but remember they will not overlook the fact that you had overstayed which makes you a risk.
Good luck!
Apply for a visitor visa? I didn't think I would need one as I'm from the UK, I know I need to apply for an eTA now to be allowed on the flight though. I never received anything about leaving, in the email he just stated if more than 90 day's have passed I should make arrangements to leave Canada Immediately, should I bring copies of that email with dates and then the dates I actually left? I kept my flight tickets for proof also, when I go back I can show I'd have a return ticket..

I'm from the UK, I'll get the eTa before I go back to Canada in around a year, records of communication being when they sent me the email about leaving before actually getting the removal order?

They have me in their files since I've applied for visas before and they know I should have left In December (I assume?) since I contacted them asking what was going on, plus wouldn't I be in the system when they scan my passport?

When I arrive back they're going to ask when I was last in Canada too no? Should I just say March 2018?
