hi there,
I was just reading the newly released OB 485-A - http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2013/ob485A.asp
It states that "Spouse and dependents of the principal permanent resident applicant" do not qualify for a bridging work permit.
My WP is expiring in Nov 2013. I am expecting my AOR shortly. When I apply for my BOWP, can I still apply for Open WP for my spouse? If not, what will her status be in Canada after Nov 2013? She is currently on visitor visa valid till Nov 2013.

Thanks is advance for your responses.

I think your spouse becomes eligible once you hold your BOWP.

>>
Certain conditions are required to be met by the holder of a Bridging WP, in order for their spouse to also be eligible for an open WP under R205(c)(ii).

In all cases the Bridging WP must be valid for longer than 6 months.

and

>>
For spouses of CEC applicants: there are no set preconditions to be met by the principal CEC applicant.

To me that sounds like you have to have a valid BOWP ( valid for more than 6 months ) and then you can apply for an open WP for your spouse.

It does not look like there is any real change, just more details have been spelled out. Spouses are usually eligible for open work permits, (it is just not a "bridging" open work permit). The online application used to allow you to apply for the spousal open work permit at the same time, I suggest you check that and see -

Hi,

I really need help with this,
We have received our AOR and my bowp is in process. However, I could not apply for my spouse as his visa does not expire for six months. I expect to receive my bowp before I can apply for him....how should I apply for a bowp/ open wp for him?

I would be extremely grateful if you could link me to something. :)

Is there any way we can apply for BOWP for principal applicant and Open WP for spouse at the same time ? Most of the time the spouse's visitor record will have the same expiry as the principal applicant's WP expiry ?

Send both at the same time.

Send both at the same time.
I guess this was the original question. Looks like based on Operational Bulletin 485-A, we cannot send both together. First, the principal applicant should get his/her BOWP approved. Then, the spouse can apply for OPW based on the approved BOWP of principal applicant.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks in advance

That is what I understood from the details.
Sending both together could result in decline of spouse's OWP.

PMM already answered this.

The rule about the work permit expiring within 4 months applies to the Principal Applicant's work permit. (Your spouse would be getting a new dependent's work permit, not a BOWP).

Hi There,

I have a question for similar topic.
I recently applied for my BOWP and Visit record for my wife (she is dependent on my PR application). Could someone please explain me how to apply for her Open work permit?... what documents are required? Can I apply using my CIC online account or she has to create her own??. I know when I was applying for my BOWP it gave me option to apply for my wife's Open work permit/Visit record, but i choose visitor as i was affraid of getting declined.

Thanks

I think your wife will have to create her own account to apply for OWP. Other seniors might have better ideas.

Thanks for your reply

Anyone any other thoughts on this?

Yes, you can apply for your spouse's WP extension along with yours.

hi there...

I have been through same situation. My recommendation would be not sending your Spouses OWP permit extension application along with your BOWP. BOWP is only for prinicpal applicant as I understand. Once your BOWP is approved, you can apply for your Spouses OWP extension based on your extended status.

Hope it helps...
