Open work permit with PR (family class) inland

Dear members,

My wife applied for her OWP on the 13th of December. She is currently on a Study permit and her study will finish in April 2020. She already applied for PR(family class, submitted 8th of October) and the OWP is based on that. Although we applied separately for PR and OWP by mail.
My worry is whether the processing for OWP will finish before her current study period. We applied early as we are planning to visit back home in July and she won't have any valid status then. Are they going to hold it or reject the application?
I would really appreciate your help and suggestion.

When you apply for an OWP as part of an inland PR application, you're supposed to out both applications in the same package. Separating them may make the application take longer than the normal three to four months.

Leaving Canada without status for more than 2-3 weeks risks the applications being rejected. Leaving Canada at all during an inland application is not recommended, and even then only without something like an OWP as it will help reentry.

Thank you for your reply. We had to apply separately as she already has a study permit and will be only completed by April.
She is not planning to leave Canada without a valid permit.

Processing time is showing 10 weeks for a new work permit. Do you think it will take around 3-4 months?

It didn't matter if she had a study permit, you should have applied at the same time.

This OWP does not have the same completion times as other kinds of work permits. They have to verify that you are eligible for sponsorship and the relationship is genuine before they will issue it, which is why you are told to submit the applications together.

Had they submitted it together, it would have been approved before her studies were done, leaving her unable to finish her studies. That may still happen.

Had they submitted it together, it would have been approved before her studies were done, leaving her unable to finish her studies. That may still happen.

It is showing 10 weeks of processing time on their website (which I have mistaken with 4-5 months for a work permit extension and PGWP). How long does it usually take? I am so worried now
Yes, she qualifies for a PGWP but I applied in this category as we will visit home in July.

Yes, she qualifies for a PGWP but I applied in this category as we will visit home in July.

You can expect the OWP app to be approved before she finishes her studies, which means she will not be able to finish.

Having a permit approved before she leaves doesn't mean anything. It does not guarantee re-entry. What is important is that she have a valid TRV, as she will not be able to return to Canada without one.

She should really consider withdrawing the OWP app, finishing her studies and applying for a PGWP.
