open work permit doing IT freelance jobs

I am on an open work permit and I am doing an IT freelance jobs like setting up a mail server, etc.
They are paying me in cheques and how do I declare all of my income? I want everything to be legal.

It looks like you're sort of a consultant?.. during taxation you can declare the the total amount you received under self employed income.
