Does anyone had tried this? Please can you give me feedback as I am planning to open an account for my study.

Thanks!
Study or immigration does not differ for the bank process.
Recently Scotiabank introduced ONLINE process for opening an account from few countries before landing.
This needs to be done 15 days or more before travel to canada.
Remember it is NOT activated until you land and present the landing documents physically at a branch yo have selected.
alternatively, bring cash and open the account in any branch on the spot (max 20 mts)

Hello everyone,

Has anyone transferred funds using a money transfer service( such as world first or money Corp ) to an account in Canada(such as Scotia start right) prior to landing?

I am investigating this since money transfer services offer better rates than banks.

Thanks for your replies.

Thanks! Did you activate your account now after landing? Please share your experience.

I know that Scotibank in Dubai doesn't accept cash ... you have to do money transfer to your account in Canada , but i know with HSBC you can open an account before landing

Can someone please guide about opening a bank account from Dubai? Through this thread, I understand Nova Scotia is a good option, and HSBC is suggested too. However there are names like RBC and Kotak Mahindra as well. Has anyone tried these? Or any other suggestions?

Visa and COPR in hand.

Thanks in advance.

I inquired with Scotia and got following info;
1) Money can only be transferred via wire or online transfer
2) Only one transaction is allowed before account activation
3) Maximum that can be transferred before landing is CAD 50k
4) CAD 15 are charged per transfer
5) Monthly charges are levied in case of daily balance fall short of CAD 2.5k or 3.5k depending on account type
6) Charges for each and every credit transaction, thus credit via DD from Dubai will also be subject to a fee.

Top Canadian banks include.
(a) TD Bank
(b) Bank of Nova Scotia
(c) Bank of Montreal (BOM)
(d) Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)
(e) Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)

However there are the other international Banks like
(a) HSBC
(b) Citi
(c) Chase, JP Morgan etc.

If you are Indian, there are other choices like
(a) SBI
(b) ICICI
(c) Kotak who have signed up with Scotia Bank

I highly recommend ScotiaBank if you are setting up from Dubai
The Quality of Service in Both SCOTIA and TD are excellent (personal experience)

Please note reply from Scotiabank - for account in dubai.

Once you receive COPR - “Confirmation of Permanent Residence”, then you may apply for a Canadian bank account with Scotiabank within 6 months, but not less than 3 weeks, prior to the date of your arrival in Canada from Dubai, UAE. A bank account is established at a Scotiabank branch in Canada and remains “frozen” until you arrive in Canada and complete standard account opening requirements (including verification of your identification) and activate the account. Thereafter you may operate the account freely using internet, mobile or other banking channels.

Pre arrival you can submit 1 wire payment for up to $50,000.00 (Canadian Equivalent) per family. Once you wire your funds to your account in Canada, kindly forward the wire copy to the officer at the branch and request a confirmation towards your wire. You can find the officers contact information on the welcome email sent to you with your account details once your account is opened.

The confirmation email from the officer at the branch will serve as confirmation towards the Proof of Funds for your landing in Canada. Please keep a printout of this email along with the copy of the wire transfer for your records. For more information with regards to our StartRight program and our current offerings please visit : www.scotiabank.com/startright<http://www.scotiabank.com/startright>

Please note : The account is NOT managed or maintained in Dubai.
Since you haven’t received your COPR yet, I request you to contact me closer to your arrival date i.e. 2-3 months prior to your arrival (once you have the arrival date finalized after receiving the COPR) for me to guide you with the most up-to-date account opening process and benefits offered under the Scotiabank StartRight Program.
