Hi All,

I got open work permit through spousal sponsorship and my PR application is currently under processing. I am currently unemployed and looking for a job. My Spouse is a PR and currently working full time in Ontario with all health benefits from his employer and I am also covered under his insurance benefits. I am looking for some advice to obtain Ontario health card. When I approached service ontario, they informed me that for temporary worker has to work full time and employed with the employer for atleast six months to get ontario Health card under OHIP.

Please let me know, if there is any way that I can get Ontario healthcard? Next question will be, even though I am covered by my Spouse insurance benefits from his employer, Can I utilize those medical benefits without ontario health card? Please advise. Thanks!!

Hi,
Please refrain from posting the same question in different threads at the same time. It is important to give people a chance to answer your question before reposting, and posting it numerous times is going to piss people off rather then convince them to help.

As for OHIP, it is correct that you will not be eligible until AFTER working for an employer full time for 6 months. Most people with the OWP have had difficulty getting approved for OHIP and have been turned away. There are a couple of people who have been successful when they have a letter from their employer written a specific way. Here is a recent thread that shows how someone recently got approved for OHIP with the inland OWP:

Regarding your husband's supplemental insurance. It will be up to the insurance company whether they will cover you for their benefits before you are a PR or have OHIP. Some people get the coverage, and some people don't. You won't be able to use these benefits for regular healthcare - only the supplementals that are offered in the package (which is usually dental, vision and prescriptions). For ordinary healthcare, you will either need to get travel insurance to cover you, pay out of pocket at a clinic or get approved for OHIP per the information above.

I would suggest you double-check with the insurance provider (the actual insurance company, not HR at your spouse's company) about being his benefits. Generally, insurance companies require people to first have provincial health coverage so that people cannot claim things that could have been paid for by the province.
